he $100 million federal grant awarded to the Chicago region Wednesday to unclog rail congestion will benefit Jimmy Buffett Parrotheads and Chicago Fire soccer aficionados along with freight haulers, motorists and rail passengers.
That's because $20 million of that money will go toward building a rail/highway underpass on 71st Street, west of Harlem Avenue and across from Bridgeview's Toyota Park, a 28,000-seat sports and music venue.
The underpass is one of five Chicago-area rail projects receiving part of $1.5 billion in Obama administration stimulus money designed to spur the economy, develop infrastructure and create jobs.
...Bridgeview officials have long sought a vehicle underpass below four sets of tracks near Toyota Park, built in 2006. Trains cause 31 daily hours of motorist delays, transportation officials said, and traffic woes are exacerbated during soccer matches or concerts.
Lipinski said CREATE projects, including the underpass, had an advantage because they are "shovel-ready." Work can start this year and be done in 2012.

Maybe someone, somewhere can find the funding for a bus stop that isn't more than 1/4 miles away from the main gate. That would be nice.

that's frickin' awesome
though...
wat?
...when combining all drivers. ie if six people are waiting for 10 minutes at the same time for the same train, that counts as an hour.
This is awesome to hear though. Nothing was more frustrating than having the cops force the traffic flow towards the tracks when leaving the park, only to be stopped by trains.

I'm glad I voted for that guy so many times now.
i still remember his campaign slogan: 'a chicken in every pot, and a rail/highway underpass near every MLS venue'
"If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing."
"I don't approve of your methods."
"Yeah, well... you're not from Chicago."

Of course, an undertaking of this size will shut down the street completely for months. No doubt right smack in the middle of our season.
Great news though.

derf, i'm an idiot.
still, that number seems kind of low given how many people can get fucked over by trains when the parking lot is clearing out. but then that street IS pretty much dead when there's nothing going on at TP. guess i'm just thinking out loud here...

I still do not understand where this money is coming from.
From all of the massive profits on the oil we're bringing in from our successful war in Iraq....
