Prior to the start of the 2005 season, the LA Galaxy, under the direction of GM Doug Hamilton and Coach Steve Sampson, retooled the roster following a disappointing '04 campaign (the G's were knocked out in the Western Conference semifinals aka the first round).

Doug and Steve acquired international reinforcements in Pablo Chinchilla (Costa Rica), Ednaldo da Conceicao "Naldo" (Brazil), Paulo Nagamura (Brazil), Guillermo "Pando" Ramirez (Guatemala), Michael Umaña (Costa Rica), as well as Americans Steve Cronin, Todd Dunivant and Herculez Gomez.  However, the biggest move was signing of Landon Donovan, after Carlos Ruiz was let go.

The G's were always up for giving the home crowd a show, posting an impressive 10-3-3 record at the HDC.  Unfortunately they were horrid on the road, only managing 3 wins and 3 ties (3-10-3), finishing the season at .500.  Part of this was probably due to Landon Donovan missing out many of the games due to national team call-ups, as the US tried to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

Playing without their best player was definitely a detriment, but the rest of the squad stepped, specifically, the 2005 Los Angeles Riot Squad Player of the Year (one of my personal favorites), Herculez Gomez.

(Man, when did Gunner and Skinner get so old?)

Even with Herc kicking ass on the field when LD wasn't around, the G's still only managed to finish 4th in the west, just sneaking into the playoffs.  But as everyone knows, the regular season record doesn't matter, as long as you make it into the playoffs.

The G's had already brought home the US Open Cup by defeating Dallas 1-0, off an early goal from Herculez (assisted by Albright).

The G's opened up defeating top seeded San Jokes 3-1 at home and then eliminated them with a 1-1 draw on the road to advance 4-2 on aggregate.  Ha ha, fuck the smurfs.  In the Western Conference Championship, the Galaxy beat the Crapids 2-0, with Landon Donovan scoring both.

At the MLS Cup final, neither the G's nor the Revolution were able to score in regular time.  Sampson made all three of his substitutions, and with the last one, he brought in Pando (the man who couldn't score a goal all season, much less even put it on frame) for Ned Grabavoy.  I remember sitting on my friend's couch and we both were discussing what was going to happen once we got to PKs.  None of the Galaxy seemed to be serious threats for scoring a goal.  Landon was mostly shut down, Herc couldn't do anything.  Even Cobi wasn't making a big impact on the game.  But then, in the 107th minute, the G's earned a corner.  On the ensuing play, Pando struck gold, volleying the ball into the back of the net.

The G's had their second MLS Cup.

In 1904,   Ford started production the Model B and Model C.

Obviously they spent a lot of time agonizing over the names.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" J. Phillips nee Magie was granted a US pattent for her new game "The Landlord's Game" pic263691.jpg

Which later became:

Then 100 years later in 2004,   Children every were scarred for life when Janet Jackson exposed her breast during the halftime of the Superbowl

Won't someone please think of the children!

But more importantly, the Los Angeles Galaxy kicked off their second season at the Home Depot Center (the crown jewel of American soccer).

Big differences marked the beginning of the season. Gone was the probably the greatest G ever to play for us:

EG4677+cienfuegos.jpg

Who was honored by LA with a farewell match at The Home Depot Center on Saturday, June 5.  But the team brought in midfielder Andreas Herzog and forward Jovan Kirovski to bolster the attack.

Jovan to bolster the attack?  That's hilarious.  That's like saying Hung Mung Bo was brought in to bolster the defense and had nothing to do with ethnic pandering.

Coached by Sigi Schmid, the G's jumped to an early lead in the Western conference. Goals were down (remember scoreless May?), but the G's were still one of the top teams in the league.

However, in mid August, with the team in first place, Schmid was fired by GM Doug Hamilton, after a five-game winless streak, in which the team scored only three goals. Hamilton said that the team had a mission "to compete for and win championships," and that "a more entertaining and attractive product on the field" was needed.

So he hired the Big Head

Sampson-Steve.jpg

Because his teams always played such an attractive style of soccer.  Right?  Right?

With the season winding down, Steve Sampson's troops were able to clinch a spot in the playoffs with a 1-1 draw against the Wizards

No, not that Wizard, these Wizards:

AET-KCW.jpg

A week later, the G's beat the Burn (who?) in front of a sold-out home crowd.  Things were looking up, as the playoffs approached.  Unfortunately, the good guys lost their regular season finale on the road at KC.  They finished 2nd in the Western conference, meaning their first opponent were the Crapids.

The G's lost on the road in the first week, 1-0, but came roaring back behind first half goals from Carlos Ruiz and Tyrone Marshall, allowing them to advance to the Western Conference Finals (2-1 aggregate).

Unfortuneately, the G's lost to KC the following week 2-0.

Important things to note from 2004 for the G's include:

  • Hartman became the all-time MLS leader for goalkeeper wins.

  • Venezuelan International Alejandro Moreno scored on each of his first 5 shots; 5 shots, 5 goals.  Incredibly impressive.

  • On April 10th, the G's played to a 1-1 tie with D.C. United, which was the first incarnation of the media circus that was the Freddy Adu show.

In 2002,

The LA Galaxy finally captured their first MLS Cup. After making it to the final 3 times previously (1996, 1999, 2001), the G's entered into the 2002 final as Supporter Shield Winners, US Open Cup Runner-Ups, and a promise of a new stadium the next year.

lag_2002team.jpg

Now, I could write about how Ceinfuego's career was winding down, but he was still one of the best #10s in the league, or about Cobi being one of the hardest working players on the field, or how El Pescadito came into the league and lit up the score board with 24 goals.

Instead I leave you with this:

I still remember the 113th minute, where Tyrone Marshall played it across to Ruiz who slipped it in the bottom right.  I remember Ruiz's reaction. It brought me to tears.  It still brings me to tears.

The march to 5 starts in 2 days.

Hope our new keeper is at least as good and less injury prone.
