Kljestan
Felipe
Grella
Taxi

were massive contributors to Marsch's 1st yr but weren't here for Petke.

11 players from Petke's '14 team who played 1000+ mins in all comps were gone after that season:
Alexander
Henry
Olave
Sekagya
Miller
Peguy
Cahill
Armando
Oyongo
Eckersley
Kimura

that and 8 more players who had fewer than 1000 mins in all comps.

Taxi was dc united reject that marsch found

Grella was cut by petke and rothsburg.Marsch and curtis gave him a chance

Kljestan replaces henry's creativity. Henry is and was a better player.

Felipe replaced Alexander.

There was no replacement for peguy, olave, oyongo, cahill or sekagya. They were all good players. Marsch relied on petke's bench playere to fill these positions

Surprised to see so many who I thought were sensitive to that stuff defend Petke.

I hate the overly sensitive culture that exists right now but the league made things very clear on that word.

First, Petke had a squad and he underachieved. When you have guys like henry, olave and cahill on your team than your expected to win at least, open cup, champions league, MLS or the supporters shield every season. In his last season he flopped.

Second, petke acts like a child and has a terrible temper. How many times does he have to get suspended? He gets paid to manage not being suspended

Third, using a slur multiple times is not cool. He is supposed to be a leader on the team. How can an organization have a leader that thinks its appropriate to use that language. Its embarrassing.

Henry was in MLS for 5 seasons. In first three seasons he won no major trophies and lost in Conference QF and SF twice. His two seasons under Petke, where he was at the VERY end of career, he won first major trophy and also reached Final of conference for the first time. So, even Henry did significantly better under Petke in his last two seasons, when he was older, then previous three seasons.

As far as acting like a child and a slur - yeah he cursed at a referee. I heard the word he used many times, he was just trying to put down/curse the referee for helping another team, that's all this was, no more and no less. Yeah, he is a former player, tough as nails, and let's not pretend he is coming from background of some PR department in an accounting Firm. He served a suspension given, and that should be the end of it. He does know his soccer though, and proved to be one of two best coaches ever along with Marsch for Metro in just two seasons, plus delivered good results for Real after. And we need to get some results for this team, that's really all that matters.

I am not of the camp that's trying to bury Petke and say he should never work again, but that's an over simplification of what he did and removes the nuance from the conversation. What he did was surely a few degrees worse than the picture you are painting.

No, the way he is portrayed is a gross exaggeration of what he actually did. Doesn't matter though, he served his suspension, and this is over. Red Bulls now need to do a smart thing and hire him, as he is someone who proved to be a competent coach and actually delivered the goods for this Club, unlike every single other one not named Jesse Marsch (assuming they fire Armas, where by the way the story is not completely written yet).

Perhaps there's exaggeration by some, but your angle is also quite the downplay. This was not as mundane as a coach yelling at a ref on the pitch, as you make it seem.

Frankly, not as big as many making it out to be.
But in the outrage world of the perpetually offended ...

Indeed. Apparently he is not only homophobe for using a common curse word, but xenophobe as well for cursing at a Hispanic ref in Spanish, which is somehow forbidden as well in the perpetually offended reality we live in. What a bunch of horseshit. On the other hand, who cares we had exactly 0 major trophies in a couple of decades before he showed up and changed that in just two years.

He would have probably just been fined if he only had said it to the refs....... But he went and made a sign that he wrote and stood in the hallway waiting for the refs. He's a moron who deserved to get fired.

Exactly my point. I was not referring to the word he used, I was referring to the excessive action he took. I don't think you need to be a part of "outrage culture" to recognize that as being a bit more extreme than just cursing out a ref on the pitch.

Yeah, but he wrote a curse word on that sign, that's it. He felt refs really screwed him and cursed out these referees pretty good. But that's the beginning and end of it. He was a moron, he got a suspension, but he served it, and that's it. Firing happened because his assistant did a great job without him. Unfortunately so far our coach hasn't, hence Petke's candidacy to replace him is being discussed.

If you don't think it's over the top to wait outside the refs room with a derogatory word written on a sign after a game when you're a professional coach I don't know what to tell ya but that's why he got fired because the team did more research into what happened into the situation.

This thread got bumped to here because there was 0 chance Petke was going to be brought back in the first place by Red Bull and even less of a chance after the word he used.

They didn't even keep the guy here after two successful seasons, you really think they were going to hire him back after the way he got fired in RSL? Lol

Petke always wears his heart on his sleeve. Its what we love about him. But by the same token, that same passion cant always fly as a coach, so Im not surprised he got fired for an over the top reaction.

I do not believe that he is a homophobe or a xenophobe.
