#1399479 Lineup, as it stands

Posted by ivo on Yesterday, 01:01 PM

Ok - whats the bet, you funny guys?

Klimala-esque acquisition (in expenditure) before 3/1? I'd bet money on that.

I am all for being anti-Red Bull or a Red Bull sceptic, but Thelwell makes moves. His career tanks if he doesn't make moves. Struber's career tanks if the team quality doesn't improve. RB can't sell players if they don't develop. Everything points to some moderate (but DP) level acquisition year after year.

In fact, if there is not a Klimala-esque expenditure for this season, then I take it as a bellwether that RB is totally out and moving their money into F1 engines. That might even be my preferred result, RB sells the team now and we get some local ownership who view the team as an end and not a means to an end. I felt that was the outcome for a bit, but the new training facility has forced me to believe they are here to stay.

That's just swinging between different extremes of unbridled optimism and wishful thinking. :) There's no way they are selling the team in the near term, but I guess there is a chance they are looking to spend ~$5M in the next month, and I hope they do. However, counting on it happening and saying "Everything points to [that]" is very optimistic imo.

I went back through MF pages from last offseason - below is when player threads were started, while I didn't open each thread, I would think the thread start date is close to the date of a first solid rumor.

Haksa - Thread started 1/5/2021

Harper - Thread started 1/15/2021

Reyes - Thread started 1/16/2021

Edwards - Thread started 1/20/2021

Fabio - Thread started 2/5/2021

Wiki - Thread started 1/25/21

Junior Adamu - Thread started 1/28/2021

Coronel - Thread started 1/30/2021

Estrella - Thread Started 2/9/2021

Diarra - Thread started 2/25/2021

Gutman - Thread started 3/10/2021

Klimala - Thread started 4/1/2021

Forget about the earlier MLS season start for a minute, and we should expect to see some movement very soon.

I see one game changer on that list (Coronel), and he took a while to get going. 0 outfield game changers*. We'll undoubtedly get some more players in before competitive games start, but anyone that will immediately make us significantly better than last season, let alone good enough to help us win MLS Cup? I'll believe it when I see it.

*maybe Reyes if you're generous, but he took a long time too; maybe Klimala if your baseline is Barlow, which it shouldn't be

I've only ever heard this preseason excuse once when Struber brought it up as a team-wide pain point last year, and it was true that they had 75% of their scrimmages cancelled to COVID. Who is out there saying that one of our guys struggled because he joined the team in February instead of January? Kaku was announced on February 16th and came flying out the gates that year. Klimala played just as well after signing in April than he did in October.

Thelwell's season-end press conference had "the last 14 games we won 2 points per game" basically as a chorus.

Additionally, check at 14:30. Roughly along the lines of "I always thought these 12 new signings improved the roster [and...] given the right support, opportunity and time to acclimatize the players could finish top 4, and we were only 3 points off it in the end"

"Tom Edwards, it takes him 57 days to come in the country.  Then he's not fit and needs to catch up"

Then year after year, they're proven wrong as those signings happen in February and March.

And inevitably, year after year, those signings underperforming for a while or even a full year is excused with "they didn't get a full preseason"

#1399032 Clark sold to Leipzig

Posted by ivo on 21 January 2022 - 01:49 AM

if that means we get to keep a good attacking player, who cares?
i guess this is one of the perks of owning multiple teams.

Oh I'm not complaining we'd get to keep Clark at all. Just saying it's an indication they don't think he's good enough to help RBL at the moment.

#1398998 Edwards going back to Stoke

When we won the Shield we had Murillo and Lawrence as all stars with Duncan backing up both spots, I don't think anyone complained.

Duncan didn't exactly cover himself in glory when forced to play on the left. We have bigger worries in our starting lineup. I'm not staying up at night because our LB backup is slightly worse than last year.

I meant escorted out of the stadium after (multiple) warnings to stop,so yeah, an ejection. Certainly dangerous for the people attempting to enforce it and fans alike, so this would be very low on the list of things to attempt.

#1398469 CB is still a problem

Posted by ivo on 15 January 2022 - 04:00 PM

the pursuit of this guy had absolutely zero effect on how quickly anything with the first team gets done. [...]
If we sign anyone for the first team too late or not at all, those fuck ups will stand on their own merit.s.

Sure, I'm certain Thelwell didn't forget to return a call from Insigne's agent because he chose to scout this guy instead. :) I was just questioning that CB is a "big problem" when I think it's the one position I'd be comfortable with if the season started tomorrow.

I agree more depth = good, but I'm way more concerned with who's starting and making a difference in midfield/offense (and yes RB) than depth at CB.

Re Klimala - same logic applies as CB, one injury or suspension or just fatigue and it's Barlow starting at the moment.

P.s. if someone gets injured at CB, we could certainly go 2 at the back and still have a solid pairing there, of course increasing the pressure on other positions.

#1397996 Davis, Sean Davis - Free Agent

"Here" can mean a few things.  I imagine he's looking for a larger role in RB Global, so he's going to play along with the money ball philosophy whether or not he expects to be directly impacted three years from now.

Yeah, totally. I was going for a non-cynical interpretation of the situation for a change. :)

Hahahah TFC just announced lorenzo insigne, instantly becoming probably the best player ever in MLS history (playing ability while they were playing here) and were just hoping to get a passable Davis replacement.

I'd still take 33yo Henry over 31yo Insigne but the rest stands completely. Hope he bizarrely flops somehow, otherwise TFC will be a force to be reckoned with for a while.

#1397911 Another Celtic guy rumoured

Posted by ivo on 07 January 2022 - 07:27 PM

Tottenham Hotspur was interested in him last year I think our sporting director is very good at finding talent his problem is just closing the deal... most of the players that was connected to Red Bulls last year played well at the club they ended up with

He's on record saying that to find the right player at the right price, you need to be very patient, otherwise you have to compromise on quality or may end up overpaying. And he's not wrong!

Also when you get the right player at the right price, it's now midseason and you have a ready excuse when the player takes a while to get going. Win-win-win, frustrated fans notwithstanding.

Very surprised. No state tax in TN probably helps his decision.

If RB replace him properly with an experienced TAM guy, no one will shed a tear. The problem is they will most likely not, of course.

Hope this means Sean's parents are doing well. Good luck in Nashville.

so toronto are signing lorenzo insigne. That's the kind of signing i'd want on this team. too bad.

I wish they did but can't blame them for not wanting to spend 12M/year in salary.

Insigne will dominate MLS like Giovinco did.

If we ever move on from cangi and shep then I would like us to go big. Bring in andres cantor. He is the best.

A DP signing in the booth but not on the pitch would be quite funny.
