there's a reason why there's a Brian Kelly Pre-Season award folks.
It's possible to be too cynical about the preseason. I tried to find out the details on Brian Kelly's goal rampage in the 2000 preseason. Turns out that he scored four goals in total, and I could dig up match reports on two games that accounted for three of those four:
10 Feb 2000: two goals vs Dallas as a 61st minute sub, playing against Dallas' draft picks and trialists. Gustavo Melfa, Tony Soto, John Atkins? Players who couldn't crack the squad on a mediocre Burn team. One goal came on a Semioli cross, the other when he was put through 1v1 with the keeper by a "perfectly timed pass" from Metro nebbish Colby Jackson.
18 Feb 2000: Vs a DC team that, while nobody knew it at the time, was shit, failing to make the playoffs and finishing second bottom. And how did he score? "The MetroStars opened the scoring in the 23d minute when Brian Kelly ran by United defender Clint Peay, who was visibly slowed from the effects of a calf strain, and slotted the ball under (Mark) Simpson."
So two late goals against Dallas' scrubs, and one goal after he beat an injured Clint Peay, represent 75% of his prolific preseason output. On the other hand, both of Bover's goals were the result of real skill, against credible opposition.
I'm not saying Bover's gonna translate that kind of play to the regular season, but there's no denying the quality of the two goals, and I wouldn't write them off as Brian Kelly-style flukes against depleted opponents.

What I like most is that the scoring is spread out over a bunch of guys, same as last year. Last year, it carried through that way for the season, when we got production across the roster. Of course, in that pre-season, the diverse set of contributors included Ian Christianson, KFC, Moreno, Rafhael Domingues, Bustamante, and Juninho. So, while the names may change during the real season, the style and philosophy of a balanced attack (and team defense) is a winner and gives me optimism.
