I still want to know if somebody has worn a shirt with beer logo and been asked if you work for said beer company?

This is pretty unfair assesment. Recall that former Metro owners did in fact get a stadium approved to be built and the design wasn't that bad either, looked similar to a PPL park. Would they have finananced the additional money like Red Bull to build the stadium they did? Probably not, but truth be told they didn't need to.

Also you really need to check your history because former Metro owners brought in some pretty world reknown names of their own. Donadoni, Djorkeaff, Matthaus etc.

We are really not that much different than other MLS teams now anyway.

BINGO..

Its funny how people forget.
The stadium thing was tounge and cheek if you ask me. Nick Sak should burn in hell for that. Fucking clown.

But anyway, we brought in Donadoni, Lothar, Youri etc, not like "Metro" didn't try. Don't forget, MLS rules were different back then.. Plus Charlie was IIRC the first owner to bring in such a "world class" player in Donadoni, and at that time, the U.S' 2 biggest heros, Tab Ramos and Tony Meola.

"Red Bull on the pitch - Metro in our hearts."

If you really think RedBull is aiming for mediocrity, I've got two new signings you obviously haven't been introduced to yet. That "being like other teams" nonsense changed for good with the opening of this transfer window.

MLS assure we are not that much different than other MLS teams, they cap the extent we can flex Red Bull GmbH's treasure trest. Every MLS team can do what we do if they so choose to.

Somewhere in Foxboro, Mass, a very heartfelt *SIGH* reads that and goes "yeah....but....do they?".

What somewhat amuses me about the debate is that- aside from Harraby and a handful of others- it seems to be the pro-RB peeps that now begin this argument as much- if not more- than anyone. From questions on podcasts to threads wondering about when it will end..it takes to two to tango in this Rojo v. Wade dance we all have, and I don't see any 'Now that they signed Marquez, I'm still calling them Metro' threads.

Whatever you sing, that you are singing and making an effort is more important than which word you are using. 101 stops what it is doing two to four times a game to get "Whole Stadium Sings With Us/Let's Go RB" going. Ignoring that effort- even if some still sing Metro- is to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Many of the people are singing RB, and the entire stadium is singing RB. Some guys aren't. So what?

If you can't support the team at all- that's perfectly fine, stay home. If you can and sing Metro, fine. If you can and sing RB, fine. But some people take the singing of Metro personally, which is not how it is intended; it's as if someone over there not singing the way you want is them doing it to mess with you personally. They're not. It's a free country, y'all. To each his own. What does it really matter if someone else has an opinion that is different than yours. If you talked to each other long enough, you'd probably find other opinions that were the same, on some topics. So?

I was around for the years when Billy Walsh was the best player on the pitch, when we were on this board trying to spin the positives of acquiring Ted fucking Chronopolous, and when we were sitting around waiting for national team players the caliber of Craig Ziadie to step up and be something. Rue the team name though I may, I would never, ever want to go back to those days compared to these. It would be nice to have a team name that didn't continually cause pointless threads and dumb arguments, but to assume that everyone who sings Metro is a Harraby is not just wrong, but so wrong it makes you wonder more about the person making that accusation than about the behavior they are questioning. I'm beginning to wonder if the pro-RB people are a bigger 'problem' to fan unity than the reserve being true, which is always alleged. Most 'Metro' people I know have given up on telling people to not sing RB, shouldn't the reverse be true as well?

Every move this team has made since Soler has been aces (or close enough). Even the ones that may not turn out (Salou, Nielsen) were the result of making a solid effort to improve the team. 3DPs awesome, stadium awesome...we have waited long enough for good times. To not enjoy them while they are here because one is too preoccupied worrying about the cut of his neighbor's lawn, I don't know, seems a sad way to go through life.

Hoover out.

Couldn't agree more. Preach the gospel, Brother Cory!

No, the name is not important, nor should it be (whether or not you want to call yourself a "traditional fan" or want to insult others as "followers")...

For me, substance matters more than style.

What the owner actually DOES is important. Not how they present the team's image. Or what they rename the team.

Is Red Bull some evil multinational corporation that came in and destroyed the local soccer CLUB? Maybe in Salzburg. But renaming an 11-year-old artificial FRANCHISE that was named after the Metromedia corporation? That ranks slightly below taking-a-penny-from-the-penny-tray and slightly above coughing-without-covering-your-mouth on the Most Evil Things One Can Do List. Oh, noes! A corporation is doing cross-promotion! They're soiling the hallowed ground that is sport with their evil money-making schemes! As passionate as we are about it, at its core, this is just a game, no matter what other meaning, symbols, and concepts fans assign to it.

I, for one, would be far more upset if I was an Orlando Magic fan (talk about ridiculous corporate-themed team names...) and my team was owned by the DeVos family. They're owners of Amway and all "intelligent design" supporting, anti-stem cell research, anti-abortion, anti-gay douchebags who are intermarried/related to the mega-douche that used to run Blackwater. If I knew my ticket was going towards killing civilians in Iraq and campaigns opposing stem cell research, I might have a problem with going to Amway Arena.

Similarly, I had a huge problem with the reactionary nutjob Phil Anschutz owning the team. George W. Bush-loving, intelligent-design-believing whackjobs, the lot of them. I actually contented myself that as evil as the NJSEA was, at least my ticket money from Giants Stadium wasn't going into AEG's pocket.

But, as far as I can see, the most evil thing Red Bull has done is make disgusting taurine-water that killed a couple of Eurotrash clubbers that drank too much of it. Saying and doing all the right things in running this team makes up for that. Sure, I wish the team didn't have such a corporate name. But I also wish most international soccer teams didn't have corporate logos bigger than the team logos. Only Barca can resist it, and look how well that's working out for them financially.

I love to angst against rampant corporatism as much as anyone. But do people not attend Arsenal matches on a large scale because they're played at Emirates Stadium?

Of course "traditional fans" will agree with Harraby. Because, as he has defined the term himself, "traditional fans" are people just like him. Over 95.7% of made-up statistics show that people that are similar to you agree with many of the things you believe!
I'm sotally tober, ossifer!

oops I mean Red Bull

edit

Look I'm in I go all the games I can I stand I sing , but I understand why some people wouldn't want to sing "red bull" without getting paid scale for commercial work.

especially guys who can remember buying a copy of "the stars a beyond" at Nathan Hales before watching the MetroStars play the Dallas Burn away.
It's US vs. Them bullshit I hate because it's the Same Team

Um, it isn't meant as a put down, I would wager most of us before we became fans or supporters were "followers" as i defined, myself included. I think you are just getting tripped up on the verbage...we can call it by anther term if that helps.

Plus motherfucking one.

It is more important to destroy the myth that this team whether it was Metro or currently RBNY had no vocal support in the stands.

if you don't get the above statement, then there's something wrong with your priorities. the focus should be on the above and the above only. if you get more worked up that somebody sings Metro or RB, then there's a deeper lying issue within you that you should work out on your own.

agreed. if we were owned by walmart, i'd wash my hands of this team, do nothing but USL/NASL, and pray for NYC2.

There clearly is a difference. I can't go to ShopRite and pick up Wizards Cola, Clippers Fish Sticks or Seahawks Potato chips.

I didn't read this whole thread yet so excuse me if this has been stated already...

You can however buy New York Yankees ice cream

Ironically, I viewed this as one of RB's positive, if unanticipated, achievements! :D

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
