We played a lot of subs in the away loss v Portland right after the semi. Can't assume we'd win all three games as opposed to getting a draw and losing twice, but we could use an extra 2-5 points right about now.

See, I put that some of that on Marsch, not the Open Cup.  Etienne, for example, should be further along.  He should be getting more minutes (either more appearances or longer ones) as sub, so that when he's needed as a starter he's more prepared.

he hasn't earned more minutes with the opportunities he's been given.

You know no one here disagrees with that. But if you look at the Portland or Philly lineups, the problem isn't starting Etienne over Muyl or even Royer. The drop-off there is not a game-breaker if it even exists. The problem is taking off BWP/Sacha and replacing them with Veron (not bad) and Duka (or Bezecourt?)/Keita, respectively. Sacha's been worse this season than the previous two, but the drop-off to a replacement level player or a rusty new guy with potential is still significant.

And not to add another excuse for us not winning those games and/or the cup final, but scheduling was definitely not in our favour around both games. We played a Friday night game @ Portland after going 120 v Cinci on a Tuesday, and a Wednesday away game after playing on Sunday (KC obv didn't have to travel AND played on Saturday). Was NYRB v Union such a big draw for ESPN that they couldn't schedule another game that day and pull ours a day earlier? AND Columbus was on short rest after the final.

Muyl has done enough to deserve three times the minutes?  Muyl does not take any of the offensive pressure off BWP.  Even if Etienne hasn't had great success, opponents still have to respect his speed and they know he can put in a good ball (see his two assists to Royer).

And, at some point it doesn't matter if Derrick's earned more time.  If you know you are going to need him to play significant minutes in matches around Open Cup games, Marsch should be trying to get him a few more MLS minutes.

They're different players, but I don't think we are any worse with Etienne playing over Muyl.  I think Marsch could make that substation more frequently and earlier.

This. He's still not good enough in terms of his defending, pressing, and general awareness of where to be on the field.

However, I think he's much better than where he started earlier this year and if he continues to improve at this rate I could see him winning a starting job next year.

FWIW, below are some offensive and defensive stats from the last five regular season games that each player made an appearance in.  Muyl has almost 3x the minutes.  Etienne clearly struggles to win tackles, but Muyl only averages a little over 1 tackle per game.  Muyl also gets beaten at the same rate.  Etienne trails Muyl in assists, 1 to 2.  The one defensive stat that's interesting is interceptions, Muyl has zero in his last five games and Etienne has two.  Knowing that there is more to the press than stats, I was trying to find Opta numbers that should how much better Muyl was in the press, tackles won and interceptions were what I came up with.  I don't know, Muyl is clearly better defensively, but does that matter if we leak goals anyway because of mistakes made by the defenders behind Muyl? I think BWP needs help offensively and I don't see Muyl doing that.

Muyl's last 5 Regular Season MLS Games:

PHI - 90mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on goals, 0 tackles won, 0 interceptions, 2 challenges lost

@CHI - 69mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on goal, 1 tackle won, 0 interceptions

@DAL - 90mins, 0goals, 1assist, 0 shots on goal, 3 tackles won, 0 interceptions, 3 challenges lost

NYC - 82mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on goal, 2 tackles won, 0 interceptions

ORL - 90mins, 0 goals, 1 assist, 1 shot on goal, 0 tackles won, 0 interceptions, 1 challenge lost

Total - 421mins, 0 goals, 2 assists, 1 shot on goal, 6 tackles won, 0 interceptions, 6 challenges lost

Etienne's last 5 Regular Season MLS Games:

PHI - 66mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 3 shots on goal, 0 tackles won, 1 interception

@DAL - 3mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on goal, 0 tackles won, 1 inteception

NYC - 8mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on goal, 0 tackles won, 0 inteceptions

@POR - 68mins, 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots on goal, 0 tackles won, 0 inteceptions, 1 challenge lost

MTL - 4mins, 0 goals, 1 assist, 0 shots on goal, 0 tackles won, 0 interceptions, 1 challenge lost
