#1362448 Davis named captain

Posted by ivo on Today, 08:00 PM

I actually think team morale is more of a problem on teams with three DPs making 10 times as much as everyone else on the team than we have with this team.  There is less likely to be jealously and what not.

Ah yes, that's why we don't get DPs. Can't risk low morale that's killing teams like Atlanta, LAFC and Seattle.

36 is old for any athlete. Petr Cech was useless as a 36-year-old for Arsenal. Robles isn't Cech, and he was in a year-over-year statistical decline that placed him solidly in the middle of the pack of MLS goalkeepers.

Moving on from Robles was the right decision.

Everything else associated with how it was handled, including signing a mediocre foreign goalkeeper to maybe be the starter, was the wrong decision.

With all of the savings from the salary of Robles, we've been able to invest elsewhere on the pitch  *checks notes* .... to ensure we bring in a backup RB and zero starting LBs.

But yeah, moving on from Robles and replacing him with younger and cheaper players (guessing here until we see details in May) is not the problem. Not acquiring starting level quality elsewhere is.

Real madrid has a squad of youth players. They are all loaned out.

Dani ceballos
Achraf hakimi
Martin odegaard
Takefusa kubo
Borja mayoral

They also developed..
Vinicious junior
Federico valvedre

And id you want to go back to the raul years.. we can add morientes and co. as well.

If the big teams like real madrid and Barcelona realize that its important to have a core of youth players coming up the ranks than why are folks here freaking out when a smaller club like rbny tries to develop their own core.

Not sure if serious. All of those except Borja and Valverde are products of other teams, and are just bought young because they have a lot of potential. You know, the thing we are asking RB to do here.

Also, did you notice that they are loaned out or not starting because the are currently not good enough?

Also, no one is saying do not use or develop RB2 players. Just make sure that they are supplemented by quality players, not just rely on replacement level young guys for 90% of the roster.

Maybe you should watch more soccer. Most of the teams below have developed their core players from within.

Ajax
Anderlecht
Feyenord
Manchester united... "class of 92"
Sporting lisboa
Real madrid
Barcelona
Santos
Athletic Bilbao

Ooh. Some of these are good examples (but even then all of these teams supplement with key external pieces, even Barca has spent heavily as the Messi/Xavi/Iniesta generation has aged), but listing Real Madrid there? Come on man. The last HG guys to be key pieces at Bernabeu were... Raul and Casillas? Guys left Madrid 5-10 years ago lol.

When he said "there is no offseason," he meant it literally, i.e. we will do nothing all offseason.

#1361984 Some people think the 2017 Open Cup run was lucky

One or two losses in league play is not that big of a hit since you can still qualify for the playoffs.

One or two MORE league losses can certainly be a big problem. Depending on the  baseline, it can absolutely mean missing out on a home playoff game or missing the playoffs altogether. Last year, an extra 3 points would have meant we would have hosted the 1st round rather than playing away.

I thought the technical name for that shot was "worm burner"

"Daisy-cutter", surely

Seriously... how much could the guy be getting paid?   As cheap as they are, I can't see that really being a factor

What else could be a factor? A few thousand (or tens of thousands, at most?) saved  in annual salary to get someone cheaper is certainly penny pinching, but what other reason would there be?

#1361200 The de Grandpre Tarps

Posted by ivo on 10 February 2020 - 11:54 AM

in 2015, this shmuck set out a plan for us to be "selling out every game in 5 years". 5 years later and we have gone the complete opposite direction, tarping off 25% of the stadium. The on-field results have been there, so you can't blame that. How this guy still has his job is completely unfathomable. Could he possibly do any worse if he tried???

Galaxy brain take: much easier to sell out if you tarp off a bunch of seats...

#1361184 Sean Davis is 26 years old

Posted by ivo on 10 February 2020 - 10:53 AM

I think Davis is better than many give him credit for its silly to say he hasn't developed well for us.

RBNY has objectively been one of the best teams in the league over the last several seasons and Davis is a big part of that, playing 124 games. He's maybe not the flashiest player in that position, but he's been a dependable starter on a top team for many seasons. Last year's mediocrity can't be put on him - he was raised in our system to play ralphball and then Armas got all weird with his tactics.

Not sure why he hasn't been given at least some responsibility/opportunities offensively. Over the last season, he's turned into a 100% sideways short pass merchant, while previously he's shown flashes of decent passing and even 1v1 skill (running past players when playing on the wing in the 3-3-3-1, good shoulder drops beating defenders). Not sure if it's just due to lack of confidence and fear of making mistakes in a down year, but would guess managerial decisions/instructions are the bigger reason. Not asking for him to be Sacha or Kaku offensively, but some attacking involvement would be nice and would open spaces for other players.

Also saw a few people point out that this only came out because they are trying to appease their fan base that is pissed about the game at RBA.

If it's not based in reality, that would be an incredibly shortsighted move.

Giroud would rule on this team. Any big striker with a touch of finesse would be great - I've wanted Mandzukic here for years.

The starting forwards for the two teams in the last WC final would be good in MLS, what a shocker. ;)

#1360623 Preseason in Florida and Arizona

Posted by ivo on 02 February 2020 - 03:25 PM

It was.  Muyl clowning defenders in the box, Buckmaster dropping dimes.  What a crazy preseason.

In fairness, Alex has been working on moves like that in the past year or two, admittedly with varying success. His issues have been more with the final pass and finishing.

#1360148 West Ham bid for Long rejected?

Posted by ivo on 28 January 2020 - 05:09 PM

The Athletic had a neat article about players forcing transfers a few days ago.

https://theathletic....rce-a-transfer/

Like others have pointed out, holding out for a better offer is perfectly fine and normal  - West Ham need to do better than 500k upfront, what a joke of an offer.

That said, not selling Long because we want to be 7th and not 9th this year is pointless, not to mention counterproductive for the player's value and the team's long-term player prospects alike.
