It was a major national catastrophe during the time frame of the MLS season.

No one thinks of MLS when thinking of 9/11.

"committee" should have ... have looked it up

Well, I did a web search, and found nothing.
I did find this retrospective. No mention of the Shield.
https://network.cbsl...terror-attacks/

Absolutely absurd

Journalistic overstatement.

let's be honest here. The committee didn't decide anything. MLS made the call and used the committee as their mouthpiece.

Honest? You do not have a clue how the decision was made. Perhaps you could have communicated with Sandman (I did), or other board members.
Easier to make things up.

No one thinks of MLS when thinking of 9/11.

I will concede on any and all of the other items, because I could give two shits about your opinions or who you talked to, but dont twist my words on '01.

Of course nobody thinks of MLS when thinking of 9/11. I would never say that. However when a decision is made to pull the Shield due in large part to the number of games played, if you don't ask "has something like this ever happened before?" and at least look into the 2001 season, thats just foolish.

"2001 supporters shield mls" pulls up this as the 3rd result:
http://supportersshi...rg/the-history/
Note the URL.
"There were hiccups, most notably when the Miami Fusion won in 2001, took the Shield home, and then promptly held the Shield ransom in protest of their teams dissolution. They claimed to have put it in a vault in the Caymans, but it made its way back in time to be presented the next year."

All this says is that Miami won the Shield in 2001.
It does not say that the season ended early.
Nor that an unequal amount of games were played.

Anyone with a passing familiarity of league history would know that 2001 ended abruptly because of 9/11, and anyone with any curiosity might check those standings to see if everyone ended up with the same number of games played.

Wrong and wrong. Almost no one remembers MLS01
and no one is checking the standings for games played.

Spoken like a true journalist.

dont twist my words on '01.

Your pearl-clutching is unimpressive.

You actually wrote that it was a major national catastrophe during the time frame of an MLS season, and that the committee should have looked it up. No twisting.

No more foolish than your rank speculation that MLS controlled the decision. Or any of your other comments.

You know that this is an ongoing story.
Why not do a little reporting? Contact Sandman.

I'm not a journalist. I post random thoughts on a message board. I do however have many contacts within MLS who openly discussed this coming well before the decision was made.

You literally admitted to twisting my words. You wrote "Nobody thinks of MLS when thinking of 9/11". I was pointing out that there was precedent for this particular subject that a decision was being made on, which they admitted to not realizing.

Anyway, carry on with the ton of support to your logic within this thread.

That is a relief.

I post random thoughts on a message board.

The decision was made in August.

You literally admitted to twisting my words.

I literally did not.

You wrote "Nobody thinks of MLS when thinking of 9/11".

I stand by that.

I was pointing out that there was precedent for this particular subject that a decision was being made on, which they admitted to not realizing.

No one realizes what happened in MLS in 2001.
Well, except you and two other people.

carry on with the ton of support to your logic within this thread.

You, too.

Clearly a bunch of people here do. I was 11 years old in 2001, didn't become a fan of the sport until 2006, and even I know that the season was cut short in 2001.

Don't project your ignorance onto everyone else. And don't excuse the ignorance of the people in charge of the Supporters Shield who should absolutely know better.

Sure you did.

If you think that everyone else remembers what you claim to have known, then you are ignorant.

I was 11 too. I know the season was cut short, but I didn't know Miami played one less game. This is obviously a learning experience for me and the rest of the board and we will gladly step aside if anyone else wants to take over and run the foundation better. Unfortunately, like any volunteer organization, we already struggle to find enough people willing to run to fill the open seats, let alone have an election. Hopefully our fuck up lights a fire under some people and they get rid of us and show us how it's done.

I mean - shit happens man. If anything, people's anger towards potentially missing out on the shield this year shows how important the work you volunteers do is to people.

I think the supporters shield is one of the coolest trophy's in sports - particularly because its run by the fans with a cool egalitarian vibe.

I have seen my share of mistakes or fuckups or by highly funded organizations - who then refuse to revisit and adjust. This seems like there was an error and the broader fan community - the supporters for which the shield is named - voiced their concern and the situation is revisited. I think its awesome to see in action.

Make sure all the board peeps keep their chins up - onward and upward.
