That's why you don't play a team in preseason, because they are trying out fringe players not their stars, but instead play east/west, north America vs the world or some other made up division among MLS players because it's supposed to be a showcase for MLS and currently its not. Or even better scrap it completely since schedule is pretty tight in july/august anyway.

Sometimes I think the entire Red Bull existence has been some 19 year old kids football manager save file he only plays when he comes home drunk. - 'Mibabalou'

Anyone know the tv ratings for this thing vs. the league avg?

I just dont understand the business logic here unless they are making a killing on advertising.

Over 72k people were there, I feel like die-hard fans across all sports leagues tend to have a strange disdain for all star games but there's clearly interest in it.

TBF, it was ATL.  They get 72K for mid-week reserve team intra-squad scrimmages.

I thought it was pretty entertaining. Except for the "in-game" Guzan interview.
This post is dedicated to all the slow defenders of the world. Godspeed! my brothers

The league isnt making their money from ticket sales for the all star game though. Especially in market that cant seat 72,000.

Whatever is sold at the stadium that day (tickets, concessions, gear, etc.) part of that is surely going to Atlanta too. Then you have to figure in paying bonuses to the players selected for the game etc.

The ratings have got to be worth it otherwise I just dont see the reasoning here.

Or maybe MLS looks at this as a marketing expense??? Which I dont quite get either. Die hards probably dont watch it. Euro snobs might watch it to see their favorite team on tour, but they arent magically gonna become MLS fans. Not in bunches anyway. Are they hoping to convert more casual fans? Not sure how that works when they have people talking in their ear saying well so and so team is in preseason so no matter the result MLS still sucks.

That's how I see it, that's why there's such a spectacle around it. The league hosts huge parties with legit celebrities, they had Waka Flocka on the broadcast. I personally thought having Guzan mic'ed up was really awesome.

Not everyone will magically become MLS die-hards, I think MLS knows that's not realistic. But hey you may grab a few that do, and you may grab a lot more that are now interested in at least checking out a game or two per year. For what its worth (not much) I've got one other guy on my rec league who is a huge Red Bull fan, but half of the team who are way more casual fans knew about the game and were talking about MLS for the first time in forever.

Dare I ask?

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

It's also a business opportunity. Everyone in the league is congregated in the same place for a week, you can bring in sponsors, etc. I'm sure it's about more than the game itself.

Garber talked about how it is a very big event for the  sponsor relationships

Yea I would imagine it's a great opportunity for them to network and impress their partners, and then get these kinds of deals.

You're still missing the part where a decent chunk of the general fan base actually has fun watching the game itself too
