#1369097 "MLS is Back" Tournament Begins 7/8

I wouldn't say we gave up on him - he just got taken in the expansion draft.  I'm not sure who we would have exposed then instead of him.

Funny that they could have had Aaron Long.  Obviously he wasn't this version of Aaron Long back then, but still.

There is always the option to stop playing the national anthem at sporting events.

Would some fans be more angry with the protests or more angry that there is no anthem at all?

If a big 4 league had quietly decided to stop playing the anthem like, 5 years ago, I think people at games would have thought, "wait did I miss the anthem?  Huh, weird," and just gone about their days.

If a league did that now, you'd probably have reactionary weirdos get up and belt out their own solo versions, while the pundit world would beat the issue so far into the ground that it would resurface in China.  Then it would be another chapter in the "liberals hate America!" saga.

98% of the people who "care about the anthem" are just mad that people they think they're superior to dare to voice any opinion.

I say get rid of it in all non-national team contexts (and the Pledge of Allegiance while we're at it), but I'm a filthy liberal, so of course I'd say that.

Also, the whole argument is fucking stupid.  It's a song.  Who cares?

Being a credible threat from distance forces the defense to open up and creates more opportunities in close.   It contributes to the success teams have had parking the bus on us.

You don't even have to score from distance that often for it to work either.  The occasional goal and some close efforts is enough to make the defender think for a half-second longer than they otherwise would.  That hesitation can lead to an open effort from distance or a slotted pass to someone making a run past a stagnant defender.

It's weird that this team has been so collectively limited from distance when the inability to break down a packed-in defense is so obvious.

#1368609 MLS has tentative plan to continue 2020 season

Posted by Arsenal14 on 03 August 2020 - 04:26 PM

Attendance has been going down in all sports for many years prior to Covid. The possibilities (not listed in any order) are high ticket prices, high parking fees, high price of concessions, great TVs for watching at home, able to watch on tablets or phones when out of the home, construction and traffic delays getting to and from the arena by car or public transportation, delays getting out of the parking lot, and worry about safety (drunken fans, crime, terrorism). Now put Covid into the mix, and it becomes very unlikely that things will turn around anytime soon.

That's not a source.

MLB attendance is down; their peak was in 2007.
The 2018-19 season was the NHL's best-attended season ever.
The 2018-19 season was the NBA's fourth-best attended season ever.  Their top 3 are the 3 seasons preceding that.
The 2019 NFL season was its worst-attended in 20 years.  Their peak attendance was in 2016.

So, again, please give me a source on your claim that attendance in sports is going down because of terrorism.

#1368608 Where is Thelwell?

Posted by Arsenal14 on 03 August 2020 - 04:18 PM

How the hell does that make any sense? Sam and BWP were better than the players teams had and could sell for $2 million, but they instead decided the keep the worse players, give up potential profit, and let those two leave for free? And if players available for free are better, why would a notoriously cheap as fuck RBNY spend millions on worse players instead?
The only free players who are "better quality" are the veteran superstars running out contracts and looking at a wind down chapter of their careers in MLS.

I knew someone was going to get mad about that statement.

Jurgen Damm just signed with Atlanta on a free transfer.
Sebastian Soto just signed with Norwich on a free transfer.
Victor Wanyama signed with Montreal on a free transfer.
Luciano Acosta left D.C. and signed with Atlas on a free transfer.
Saphir Taider signed with Montreal on a free transfer.
Andy Najar just signed with LAFC on a free transfer.
Cubo Torres just signed with Atlanta on a free transfer.

That's all in the last...6 months?

What players of that quality are MLS teams signing, particularly from Europe, for $1-2 million?

Even before Covid, attendance was falling all over sportsdom because of the terrorism issue.

I'm gonna need a lot of sources on that claim.

Even at the rate we spend, your not getting an impact player.  Dont underestimate MLS.

1.5M euros is not getting an above average player out of a championship level league.  Thellwell is not that savy.

Average to below average player in those leagues arent coming here to tear it up.  We need to spend 3-5M to get some player that will have an impact.

This or go get some players ready to retire.

Josef Martinez scored 7 goals in 58 Serie A appearances.  He was straight up shit there.

He still cost Atlanta $5 million.

$1.5 million out of any decent league in Europe is getting you a project and nothing more.

And further, Northern Ireland advanced to the Knockout Stage in that same tournament, in exactly that fashion. 1 win, 2 losses.

On the other end, Switzerland got knocked out of the 2006 World Cup without ever losing a match or conceding a goal.

Weird shit happens in tournament soccer.

Remember all the people here peddling that BWP is washed up because "father time is undefeated" bullshit before the season started?

They couldn't be more wrong.

He would have been useless for us.

I'm glad he left so that he can actually do something with the rest of his career.

Bizarre lineup choices.

No subs when its get a goal or go home.

The wild thing about these for me is that, normally when a coach is struggling to find a winning formula, he'll chop and change and try some weird shit. But Armas isn't doing that - he's the "this is fine" meme as the team burns behind him.

Second goal of the tournament Tarek has given up through an amateur hour mistake. Parker still somehow looks worse. What has happened to our CBs....

The coach changed.

Moreno is one of the worst commentators in all of sports. Couldn't stand this guy as a player and I dislike him even more as a commentator.

Everyone involved with ESPN FC is a cancer.  Moreno is the worst of them.

He basically makes his living shitting on MLS despite the fact that he was a mediocre MLS forward, at best, when the league fucking sucked.

Don't get the excitement about this.

He scored every 4 games in the 2.Bundesliga and had a scoring rate in the 3.Liga almost identical to Terrence Boyd.

He'll be a squad player, nothing more.  This signing is just a continuation of the same transfer policy - bring in a ton of mediocre dudes on the cheap and hope you accidentally strike it rich on one.

Time to bring this thread back to life.

Using the same starting XI with 4 days rest for the team's 4th game in 9 months tells me that Armas knows fuck-all about sports science.  Someone like that can be a coach, but there's no way they should be a head coach.

The only way this would be acceptable is if all of our players were doping.
