MLS U22 player rule still included in revised CBA

The terms of the deal would also keep in place plans for an under-22 player initiative set to begin in the 2021 season, the source said. That new discretionary spending category would allow teams to sign up to three players under the age of 22 with no limitations on acquisition costs, as long as the players salary is less than the maximum budget charge, which is set to be $612,500 in 2021. The under-22 initiative player signings would then be counted at a reduced budget charge similar to young designated players

Misconception that the team is young
19 December 2020 - 08:36 PM
They are not going to spend a transfer fee to bring in a 27 year old. However with the new front office I can at least see them trying to bring on 27 year olds on a free transfer or else maybe trade for a 27 year old within the league. It's obvious that they can't expect to win with a bunch of raw 22 year olds filling out the squad
I expect the transfers to remain on the young side, but I think its a misconception that the players who receive a high percentage of the teams minutes are young. Meara is 30, Long and Parker are 27-28, Davis is 27, Valot is 27, Royer is 30.
The bigger issue remains that these guys are nice players but most of them, sans Parker and Long, arent top players in this league at their positions. Ideally Davis and Valot would be valuable squad depth in midfield (especially if they still think Davis is a 6), and Royer someone who isnt cemented in the starting lineup every match.
It all comes back to RBNYs inability to evolve with the league and the increasing talent gap.
