Thread split... Years of futility, playoff failures, miss management, lack of promotion and more sports and entertainment options than any other market in the country has made this fanbase apathetic and fractured. By the way the metrostars did start with good attendance in the beginning. And to add to that just look at a franchise like the devil's. Plenty of winning, legendary players and they still have problems getting people to the Rock. The Rangers on the other hand haven't won as much over the past 3 decades but still sellout all the time and most regular ranger fans can't afford tickets. Also look at the Knicks who haven't won a championship in close to 50 years and have probably been the worst NBA team the last 20 years but still draw and sellout. It doesn't make sense really. These other markets coming into the league are completely different to the sports and entertainment competition provided by our area. They are also helped by not having the history of futility, apethy and being written off by the fanbase like we have. I also think there is also an unconscious stigma against the quality of MLS in this area that we can't get rid of. These other markets are also a part of the surge of popularity of soccer and more specifically the US team around the country that has only happened in the last 10 years.

And Olsen didn't turn DC into a bunch of whining, diving.. oh, nevermind

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

I've been a season ticket holder for the Devils and Red Bulls for a very long time. Devils attendance issues has been overblown for years. They had more people at their game yesterday to watch a shit team than the amount of people at RBA last night.

Devils attendance has been very solid since moving into the Prudential Center considering how bad they have been most years playing there and the fact they have missed the playoffs 7 times since moving there and only advanced past the 1st round 1 time in 12 seasons there.

You can talk about all the past success but that does nothing to take away from how awful they have been the majority of the time in this new arena.

They have missed the playoffs 6 of the past 7 years and this season has been absolutely horrible but the crowds have been great. Attendance is sitting at 92.4% capacity this year which is amazing considering all their injuries and the fact they have been basically been a minor league team cause of the injuries.

People are coming out to their games, it's just that the midweek mildly attended games against western conference teams that nobody cares about gets overblown into "no fans!"

Here's the Devils capacity per season since moving into the Prudential Center...

18-19 - 92.4% no playoffs
17-18 - 92% 1st round knockout
16-17 - 94% no playoffs
15-16 - 91.3% no playoffs
14-15 - 86.2% no playoffs
13-14 - 88.7% no playoffs
12-13 - 97.1% no playoffs
11-12 - 87.4% lost in the finals
10-11 - 83.08% no playoffs
09-10 - 88.1% 1st round knockout
08-09 - 89.6% 1st round knockout
07-08 - 88.3% 1st round knockout

Knicks and Rangers are hard to use as a gauge for attendance. They are centrally located for the entire city and the only teams that play in Manhattan. Every large firm in the city has tickets and distribute them to employees and clients.

Agreed with Satans Hockey on the Devils. Their attendance is relatively strong, contrary to reputation. Devils are at a point now where all the kids who grew up in the 90s, like myself, watching a winning team, are able to buy their own ticket plans. When theyve been good since moving to The Rock, 2011/2012 and 2017/2018 seasons, theyve had some really big and raucous crowds.

RBs email blast from last week was showcasing Nani as the main attraction

The fact is ppl with a semi open mind who are on the fence about comming to a game need a few stars to come out

Im not saying sign every big name thats on his decline but these types of players need to be incorperated into the team.

Outside of the big 6-10 champions league teams out there sign these types of players.

Even with an Rooney and Ibra on this squad we still wont come close to the levels these newer markets like Portland attained but well be more relevant

5 year plan

I'm not necessarily in the get a famous player camp, but hasn't attendance declined without star power even as the team has been more successful?  Some people do like to come to games to watch star players.

Even if you bring a famous player in the Henry mold, attendance would go up, what, 5k? 5000 × 30 × 15 games = 2.3M. The salary alone would be more, so doesn't make too much financial sense. Maybe break even if you account for concessions, best case scenario? The question is whether that player actually contributes towards success or not.

I'm fine if they prioritise bringing in the right young players on an upwards trajectory like Kaku, not fading stars like Pirlo or Lampard that are maybe good for a year. Maybe bring in more of them like ATL have, not just the one! (Though maybe I should be counting Jorgensen as well.)

Decidedly untrue.

In Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill's last year, they averaged 19,421. They never topped 19,691 with Titi.

The attendance went up the season after he left in 2015, then up again in 2016 and finally a third straight time in 2017 before tailing off last year. It cracked 20,000 in '16 and '17,  the first times over 20k since back in 2001.

Now, FWIW, I'd agree the attendance is disappointing considering the quality of the product - the best stretch in team history, by some measure - and the building they play in.

Not baffling at all.

Historical failures + zero advertising
RBNYs advertising model as it is , is a total failure

And now you add in the whole PATH debacle (out of their hands).

Attendance is going to be very bad this year and next year. Worse since they stood pat and the on field product will suffer some

If you want more people to have a vested interest in the team the following is necessary:

Championships (the MLS Cup variety)

Marketing (other than cold calls and emails)

Re-Branding (stating the obvious here)

Star Power

Do all that and then you'll start to fix the issue.  We're in Harrison long term, so location isn't fixable.

Im not taking about sell outs. Im talking about not showing up to a saturday match looking like a midweek USOC match

The proven star(s) wont turn us intoAtlanta over night but it will give the people that casually follow the team to make that extra bit of effort to come out.

Theres no excuses. The DP, TAM, and GAM mechinisms allow the team to bring in a variety of players from the Ibrahimovics s of the world to the Bezecourts of the world into the club.

Sure the kaku signing was nice but theres no reason why there shoulsnt be 1 Giovinvo or Carlos Vela type of signing on this team to supplement the squad.

Every so often Theres a different level of player out there that becomes available and it goes without saying that were never involved with that rumor.

Its hard to get the casuals out there that work 60+ hours of the week m-f if you factor in commute times to spend their precious weekend night to watch our farm team.

You are accepting RB numbers, which IMO fail the eyeball test. Posting tickets distributed as legitimate attendances, instead of turnstile counts, is disingenuous.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

A lot of fans probably feel the same way I do right now, which is why should they participate in a fanbase that is constantly depressed and negative even in years where RBNY wins major trophies. Our fans are about as fun as a root canal.
