#1337851 FCC Expansion Draft

Posted by Brian.MLS on Today, 07:52 AM

I've seen a couple people elsewhere suggest leaving BWP and Kaku unprotected because they don't think FCC wants to spend money on a DP.

If we lose either one of those on this mickey mouse league mechanism, I will lose it.

As would I, but doubt this happens. FCC reserves the right to negotiate after drafting a player. Also, nothing to prevent taking the player and trading them away right away for a boatload of GAM/TAM for a team willing to pay DP salaries.

Still dont understand the need for the Expansion Draft. Give the Expansion teams $500k of additional GAM and let them trade it if they want MLS players.

#1337658 2019 NYRBII USL Thread

Posted by Brian.MLS on 06 December 2018 - 06:16 AM

With schedule being released on Monday (12/10), I figured now is a good time to start this thread.

In the meantime, some former player movement (I will update this by making edits to this post as changes happen):
Speedy Williams may not get a chance to win a 4th USL Cup in a row as he wasn't retained by LouCity. Bring back the lucky Speedy!

Tampa Bay is keeping their number of former Red Bulls alive. Despite not resigning Flemmings and Bonomo (they did resign Najem), they signed Brandon Allen.

Junior Flemmings is onto Phoenix Rising, where former academy and U23 player Joey Farrell was re-signed.

Zach Carroll is staying with 1868, Swope Park resigned Justin Bilyeu (and former academy player Ethan Decker)

Tyler Ruthven resigned with ATL2.

GK Kyle Reynish retired.

Konrad Plewa will return to RSLs reserve team.

Kosuke Kimura and Bolu Akinyode will return to Nashville SC.

In Sacramento, Rafi Diaz returns and they are negotiating to keep Jeremy Hall.

Former U23 player, Thomas de Villardi signed with Austin Bold after being plagued by injuries while with Minnesota United.

Robles (Meara/Louro)
Murillo (Duncan) - Ndam - Long - Taxi (Lade)
Davis (Bezecourt) - CCJ (Kofi) <I think all 3 of CCJ, Koffi and Beze would battle for that spot>
Valot (Muyl/Mines/Ivan) - Kaku - Royer (Etienne)
BWP (Abang/White)

I recall Armas being the one to push Jesse on Valot at right wing. Hard to think he loses that spot unless the injury derailed him enough or they sign a starter to that role.

Amazing fact: before Redding, the last field player to go 90 minutes in his one and only Metro game was Louis Ken-Kwofie... in 1996.
In fact, the only four field players are Redding, LKK, Ken Hesse and Danny Barber (the latter two were cut after starting the inaugural Metro game).
If you include goalkeepers, Alex Horwath and Chris Konopka, both in 2011.
What a career, Tommy!

Technically Ben Mines is also on this list.

Mike Nugent played the full 90 in his only league game, but had some USOC action.

#1337371 Who to root for in MLS Cup 2018?

Posted by Brian.MLS on 01 December 2018 - 08:53 AM

Portland: My favorite MetroStar in the early years wins the title, especially the way we released him from his Academy Director spot, would be justified. Also, Atlanta gets zero trophies, but will get CCL and we won't.

Atlanta: We get CCL games and an early start to the season, meaning less waiting in the offseason.

I guess, in my book, it's a win either way.

Am I the only one who thinks we need to upgrade Royer? Dude disappeared ALOT this year.

We scored 4 goals this post season. Royer scored two and assisted the other two. BWP had a total of one shot on goal...in 4 matches.

Royer is a hot/cold player. I'd prefer him as a "supersub".

#1336995 Academy Director David Longwell Out

Posted by Brian.MLS on 29 November 2018 - 06:57 AM

I think it is simply the style of play not fitting the Red Bull style with some of the newer players that have been brought in by Longwell.

We have some really talented players in some positions and he was bringing players in that played those same roles.

Meanwhile, academies around us are improving.
We have dominated for a long time, but now with the U18/19 group we sit third in our region behind Philly and Richmond. In the U16/17 group we sit 4th behind Philly, DC, and PA Classics.

#1336573 Playoff format changes expected next year

Posted by Brian.MLS on 23 November 2018 - 08:48 PM

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that people are complaining about a 2-hour flight, as if it gives one team a big edge.

I'm not complaining, and sure as hell not saying it's going to give a team a big edge. This thread is about the format in general, not a specific flight from ATL-EWR nor posted in the game thread. In fact, the argument I brought up was from a conversation last year and with a guy that works for FC Dallas. He stated that it has been a painpoint many FOs have had for a while regarding this format, where teams are looking for all advantages possible and frankly are deserved for better regular season performance.

Using this matchup, how does an extra flight on a 3 day rest during holiday chaos give a competitive advantage to the better seeded team?

Great article.

The last paragraph eludes to the fact that Tyler may be leaving shortly.

Adams & Long both starting.

Enormous F U to Dave Sarachan.

#1336423 Playoff format changes expected next year

Makes sense, the one thing I don't like is more weekday games. I personally don't mind them but it's clear that other people do because attendance is never great for them here.

Currently teams are playing about 4 weekday games. Good news is that this structure would mean 2 weekend games will be moved to 2 weekday games total. Figure one at home, one on the road, so not a drastic change for attendance totals. More concerned about wear and tear on players, especially with the CCL and USOC.

#1336110 Youtube video about Red Bull ownership

Posted by Brian.MLS on 14 November 2018 - 10:10 AM

Unfortunately that snippet was mine, and I went on to expand about how there was a direct correlation between increased Leipzig spending and decreased NY spending.  It didn't come across in that snippet, where I was specifically talking about how Leipzig's rise to the Buli killed a lot of the 1st team roster spending here.  It was part of a 20 minute wide ranging interview where a lot of those things were discussed.  I addressed all of them in my portion.

Absolutely agree that Leipzig, especially after being promoted to the Bundesliga, has had a "big spend" on player(s) financial impact on this club.

BTW, I enjoyed your segments. Valid points on a few topics.

#1336093 Youtube video about Red Bull ownership

Posted by Brian.MLS on 14 November 2018 - 05:22 AM

I don't mind the video. I dont agree with much of it, but some valid points. Lots of inaccuracies (Leipzig was purchased before Henry, before Cahill, Marquez, Kaku...). Very one-sided points of view.

I have a tough time with someone complaining about marketing, while wearing a Metro practice jersey in which the Nike logo pops out so much, especially after Nike's recent marketing stunts.

It took me years to get over the change to Red Bull but the results of getting the stadium over the hump, building the academy, spending money on a USL team and sticking by it even though they have the WORST attendance, and putting a winning product on the field have gotten me over the MetroStars name. How's Kraft doing with the Revs? Is our team moving to Texas? Are there rumors of our team vanishing due to ownership financial issues?

Personally, having Red Bull on our jerseys is a helluva lot better sponsor than "Bimbo" or Etihad or a pyramid scheme company.

Question: if disaster strikes tonight and we end up with an Atlanta-KC final doesn't that particular matchup (or either of them winning it) guarantee us a spot in next year's CCL?

Well, we now have a 75% chance of being in the CCL. In with anyone but Portland winning the MLS Cup (sorry Gio but I am rooting for Vermes and SKC now)

Enough nonsense talk, Red Bull win the MLS Cup and make these scenarios irrelevant.

Bretos and about a homer as you can get in Alejandro Moreno. Awesome. Good work ESPN.
