Sunil 'Kumar' Gulati is probably a nice guy, possibly a decent lecturer in economics and I'm sure a loving dad.

However, Kumar is an impediment to the success of the American Soccer movement.
He has been criticized for maintaining the primacy of amateur soccer politics in a supposedly professional soccer organization.
He has been criticized for making agreements with sporting goods makers (i.e. Nike) to keep certain players in the US organization on the field when they are no longer competitive enough to help.

It is also likely that his refusal to give up such agreements cost US Soccer Juergen Klinsmann as a coach in 2006. The result has been back-sliding in the progress of US Soccer's on field results.

Soccer is a low profile sport in the USA, so Kumar gets to slip away into the shadows, popping up only to take credit for the growth in popularity of the MLS, the bids for future World Cups. Meanwhile, Bob Bradley continues to bungle away the best talent in US Men's Soccer history. Kumar's handiwork also includes overseeing a decline in the professionalism and management of the US Women's team.

It's time we had a truly professional results driven Soccer Federation in the United States, and the first step is getting rid of Sunil Gulati.

How many times has Hope Solo wished Sunil Gulati was fired?

This is what she told me when I asked her:

president = soccer fanatic, presentable optic, skilled speaker

most important staff for the soccer (national teams, youth set ups and strategies) side = technical director ala Matthias Sammer at the DFB in Germany for example.

He has been criticized for maintaining the primacy of amateur soccer politics in a supposedly professional soccer organization.

While this is a good point, in that he hasn't been able to wrest control of the upper levels of the game from its amateur base, that could be due to the nature of the base itself. Gulati and the BOD itself, are elected by the membership of of the Fed, which includes representatives of the youth ODP/"development"/Pay-to-Play machine (which prevents meaningful youth development reform) and the amateur state associations with their own local agendas, which have helped to prevent the development of a meaningful lower-level club pyramid. The professional division really only accounts for a third of the power within US Soccer.

Why would the other two-thirds care about the Nats that much? Why would they elect someone like Beckenbauer or Cruyff would would gut the youth club/college scholarship scam nexus' influence and force the ethnic leagues that run the states to think beyond their local beer leagues and actually get behind multi-state leagues like the USL, thus growing the number of professional clubs in this country? Gulati would have to either steal from the Fed or get oral from a boy scout in the middle of the AGM to get "fired" from his post. He is an elected official in a non-profit sport governing body, not a professional GM of a club, and since holding onto BB isn't costing the "evil" two-thirds of the sport's power structure in this country, I doubt Sunil is going anywhere until his term is up.
