#1440706 No MLS in 2024 Open Cup

Posted by John Flushing on 22 December 2023 - 09:08 AM

The Don should change the Leagues Cup to every four years. This is the reason for the schedule getting so full. It's not USSF fault he created a new tournament to flex MLS' might against Liga MX, get more money and undermine the Open Cup.

He should just pull the plug on the Leagues Cup altogether (really, there was no need to create the Leagues Cup in the first place). A very special tournament, to allow M.L.S. teams to flex their might against Liga MX teams, already existed, and it still does. It was (and still is) called the Concacaf Champions League.

Maybe not everyone will agree with this, but I think this decision is an atrocity.

"MLS teams won't compete in 2024 U.S. Open Cup, developmental clubs to participate instead"

https://theathletic....ls-us-open-cup/

Thinking you are too good for the long running cup competition just because you got some big name players is pathetic.

In order to alleviate fixture congestion, I would rather see the M.L.S. teams participate in the U.S. Open Cup, and forego participation in the Leagues Cup. I don't see it happening though, since it would make too much sense.

#1440286 Sin bin or ice box coming?

If MLS is going to test it, it will likely be done in Next Pro for a couple of seasons before coming to MLS. Even then, there are Player Association rules/fines in place that would need to be cared for and refs having more flexibility for different cards would lead to more cards being shown and an uptick in fines.

Unless it becomes a FIFA rule, I don't think MLS should be the ones pioneering it.

Major League Soccer already pioneered a regular season shootout, and also a clock which counted down to zero. We all know how that worked out.

So I'm gathering this is like an "orange card" option? I like it, there are so many instances where a player gets ejected for a technicality where the punishment weighs far more than the crime. Playing short-handed for ~10 min is a good balance for something like a professional foul or dissent, and still leaves ejections on the table for more serious infractions.

I think that in the indoor game (Major Indoor Soccer League) this is called a blue card, rather than an orange card.

And the current system is the fine the way that it is now. There is no need to reinvent the wheel.

#1400939 The Coronavirus Thread

Tharee points in response to the topic at hand.

1) A lot of the basic sanitation practices, which I have seen people putting into practice because of the virus and only the virus, are things that people should have already been doing all along. Prior to the virus, I would see people carrying their keys in their mouth, envelopes in their mouth, etcetera. At a hotel in Denver, Colorado in 2018, I was in the breakfast room, and I saw somebody carrying their breakfast ticket in their mouth. Yuck!

2) I can't believe it took the coronavirus to get people to understand that buffets and hot food bars are so disgusting. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that buffets are not sanitary.

3) I have always hated enormous crowds (even before the virus), so much so that I avoided visiting restaurants, grocery stores, etcetera on weekends and holidays (for example, I went to Philadelphia and visited the Liberty Bell on a Tuesday in 2018, in order to avoid any weekend crowds). Crowded places are annoying and waiting in line for an eternity is even more annoying.

feels weird not to have a July 4 away game.

I feel honoured that we were chosen to be the visiting team for the Canada Day game in Toronto. Hopefully we can spoil the celebration this year and we will be the ones who have a Happy Canada Day.

#1323167 Things I Hate III: Braddock

Posted by John Flushing on 10 April 2018 - 01:22 PM

I hate the Greyhound bus company which had a bus ran one and a half hours late, which caused me to miss my connection, which is going to cause me to be awake half the night because of the bus schedule, waiting for the next connection. I called them scumbags to their face and told them that I will boycott their corporation for the rest of my life, even if I stay alive until the year three thousand.

I will always wish the best of luck in the Concacaf Champions League to any Major League Soccer franchise which does not represent the District of Columbia.

As much as I hate being named after a soft drink, I would rather have this than be rebranded as Cosmos. Having been in existence for more than a decade, we have forged a separate identity from the New York Cosmos, and therefore should retain such identity.
