Not a bad preview by Leander Schaerlaeckens.

The big question really is Rafa Marquez. If he is bollocks (in the derogatory fashion) in midfield then what? Does Hans Backe have the balls to bench him? Does Backe/Soler have the authority to not play a DP? The owners of NYRB are paying big money for Rafa Marquez, can Marquez not be played?

So far, this pre-season, I'd rather see Victor Paulson instead.

Didn't they tell you in Internet school Eleazar, NEVER read the comments. It just raises your blood pressure abnormally. But, on the serious tip, I'm really getting annoyed of all of this Cosmos talk.

Sigh.

I’ll tell you this much. Sadly, I have to agree with Leander on this one (trust me, that’s not easy). No more excuses and free passes with this team (it ended some years ago, for me), and to tell you the truth, that also goes with the fan base as well. As much as I support this team, in the end, I feel that this is nothing more than an 18-year failed experiment and pro soccer will never be whole fully accepted in this area unless they are called the Cosmos. So, in my view, this is it. If this club doesn’t make it to the final this season, or have any major silverware to show for it, I say blow the whole fucking thing up and start over, new team name, new owner, new sponsorship, the whole nine yards.

Despite the changes to the first team, (some positive, mostly negative) based on the talent we have we’re supposedly “close”, but we’re actually a million miles from where we need to be… Feel free to chime in here.

Absolutely, but what is "fully accepted" anyway? The Cosmos will attract a lot of hipsters, some soccer-world celebrities to their games, but the city will never embrace them the way they do the Knicks or Rangers. It's just not American culture.

As for Red Bull, as much as we pee on Harrabie for saying it, the brand has a lot to do with the team's "foreignness" to most New Yorkers. Americans are barely used to having a sports team that doesn't follow the generic formula City_Animal Plural. To expect NYC to embrace something that not only deviates from the standard formula, but then introduces an Austrian corporate brand as the name of the team itself...it is way too esoteric for most people's tastes. I'm not complaining, it's absolutely fine by me, but I happen to enjoy the sport. To expect a team of walking billboards playing an unpopular sport to captivate a city with the most other entertainment options in America... is a little far fetched.

Wrong.

One of the biggest myths is that NY is a great sports town. It is not. What NY is is a great WINNING sports town.

Out to dinner with friends last night and the conversation turned to the Knicks. They are glued to the TV all of a sudden due to this Linsanity thing, but admitted they hadn't seen a game since Ewing. New Yorkers are fair weather fans. But if this team starts winning they will turn out in droves. NY loves anything hot.

There are ethnic restaurants from literally every part of the globe here. They will come to see ( notice I don't use the term support) anything if it is a winner. Soccer is not too esoteric, NY'ers pride themselves on liking esoteric things. "We are so sophisticated." what they won't do is fill the stadium through thick and thin. Real supportes are a minority despite the city's size. That's why you hear all these ultimatums and threats: "They better win this year or else", "anything less than victory is an epic fail"' etc.

This town does not have the patience for a losing enterprise. Chances are this team will not win the cup this year. I say right now to all of you who can't stomach that prospect, leave now and save your money for something else. Don't claim you are a fan of the RedBulls, you are not. You are a fan of winning. The positive memory of the Cosmos is because they were winners. If they had been a second rate team their resurection would not be desired by anyone.

That is the NY way. True supporters who will bitch, moan and groan, but still come out to cheer on the losers in crummy weather, despite all the inadequacies, are few and far between, but to me they are a precious lot to honor.

Just accept that we will probably lose, stop the whining and get out there and enjoy the experience.

One of these years they will win it, then the stands will get crowded and your ticket prices will go through the roof, because that is the NY way.

It's predicated on a flawed concept: that we are stacked.

Are we? We have a coach few like, no CAM, no-name rookie GK's, only two midfielders is there general agreement about (Lindpere, Richards), our 2nd striker uncertain, depth questionable, questions at both starting CB's. Do I need to go on?

We are stacked just because we overpaid for a 2nd DP that hasn't delivered?

This team has potential and could go all the way, but until Matt or Dan says we are stacked, I don't buy it.

This is why I love you guys, despite my concerns and useless rants, you give me some solid perspective on the state of things. I really appreciate that a lot. And, you are absolutely correct, NY is a fair-weather fan town, win a few games (notice I didn’t say championships), and all of a sudden, you are surrounded by fellow “fans” who say they have been there from the beginning. It’s like winning the lottery, and you are surrounded by friends and family you never had when you were broke.

For a lot of the die-hards and true-believers, this is an insult that we have to endure. As you know, this comes with the territory.

Meanwhile, the die-hards get ignored and dismissed except in the papers once in a while. Look, I love this team, the supporters (my lovely girlfriend and I joined the Empire Supporters Club this season, she will be sitting in section 101 singing her heart out), the atmosphere at the arena, and of course the league. Anything I can do to support the cause, I’ll do. It’s just tough when you bring up the Red Bulls in any conversation, you get a “When are the Cosmos coming?” retort. Because of that, the frustration grows.

And, that’s why I said no excuses this year and all the years to come for this team and its fan base. We need to let people know there is a team worthy of their support. Not because of winning, just because they are here and have been here for a long time. The team’s marketing strategy is not as strong as it should be, and yes, I get on the FO’s case about it constantly. I told Chris Heck recently, I’m tired of this team operating like it’s in the Witness Protection program. The only advertisement I saw about opening day was during the friendly on Thursday. Since then, uh, nothing. That spot should be running at least four times a day. Am I wrong?

Call me a fool for caring about something I shouldn’t be caring about, but then again, that what makes me a supporter, does it not?
