It is hard to argue that this nation is that much greater than the others. I’ve been there and have seen what is available. It isn’t different.

Can anyone imagine if he was killed because of his census work? The guy counts people. What the fuck?WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery. A law enforcement official says the word "fed" was scrawled on his chest.
The body of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old Census field worker and occasional teacher, was found Sept. 12 in the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky.
Investigators have said little about the case. A law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity, tells The Associated Press the word "fed" was written on the dead man's chest.
FBI spokesman David Beyer said the bureau is helping state police determine if Sparkman's death was the result of foul play, and if so, whether it was related to his census work.

Presently, theres a growing trend of young, American white collar workers moving to mainland China. On the subject of “voting with your feet,” US News & World Report has an article from 2008 going over the increasing number of American citizens leaving the country. I have friends moving to China in a month because of the amount of money they will make. I considered something similar several times over the last few years. I have a friend that is in England now because of job opportunities.
It is hard to argue that this nation is that much greater than the others. I’ve been there and have seen what is available. It isn’t different.

"So wait, a brace is when someone scores 2 goals." "Yep." "...and a hat trick is 3 goals." "Right." "So than what's 5 goals? Is there a name for that?" "A Mathis."

yeah, because for almost 3/4 of those 200 years, there were alot of people doing all the dirty work for free (and then next to nothing), not to mention little kids crawling around huge machines sometimes getting limbs chopped off and at the very least not going to school...as a matter of fact, the gov't set up conditions for a 'sort-of' free market to exist, which by definition is regulation.
I'm talking about before the ruling on Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad.
As long as your name was Carnegie, Rockefeller or Vanderbilt that 200 years was a scream.
Our good old government handed them those monopolies on a golden platter. Not a very free-market thing to do.

On the prior thread I posted a series of links about how the power of the Federal government is now being used to suppress dissent and potentially lead to criminal sanctions for political dissent and surprisingly there was no comment from anyone.
The Obama administration has placed a gag order on the health insurance company Humana preventing them from sending mailings out to their customers which effectively mirror the findings of the Congressional Budget Office concerning whether or not the proposed Health Care Reform bill will cut medicare benefits.
Can any of the Obama Administration supporters here explain how a gag order on political speech is a good thing [let alone Constitutional]? Can any of the supporters of the Administration explain why there is no outrage from the Left at an Administration using the power of the Federal government to suppress dissent?

here's your witting title, i was actually thinking about starting a politics II today, but calling it "for people other than pebble and steve"
i'd say use that, but i don't want to make a liar out of the thread...
As I am taller, older, and uglier I demand top billing. It should say "For people other than Steve and Pastor".

assuming most of what you're bringing up is accurate...if we can survive 8 years of cheney/bush abusing their power and trampling our civil rights, we can take at least 4 years of obama/biden lol.Returning for a moment to actual politics in today's America rather than questioning mercantilist policies of the 18th and 19th centuries and how they may have affected America's westward expansion, a topic which had nothing to do with the original discussion of free market capitalism as opposed to state controlled economic planning -

if that's the case, that's nothing new. what cracks me up about republicans is the push for a smaller federal government, yet ALL the measures they take, end up increasing the power and/or size of the government. shit, bush INVENTED A WHOLE NEW GOVERNMENTAL DEPARTMENT IN 2001!!! and gay marriage and abortion bans, the 2 biggest distractions the republicans use, are doing nothing but having the federal government interfere with people's personal lives. i invite you to list 2 things that happened between 2000-2008 that lead to a smaller government/less intervention.
and republicans have to accept the fact that a smaller government also includes a smaller military/far less military spending, which is something i highly doubt they want to do...especially since they're cornering the fear market in a post 9/11 world, and if the scaredy cats and hicks were to see the republicans shrink the military, then they'd lose the last voter demographic they had left.

Bush created an unnecessary Department with an overbroad mandate. With the assistance of a cowed Congress, both republicans and Democrats, his Adminstration started an unconstitutional and unnecesaary war. His Administration with the agreement of both parties rushed through measures which threaten the Civil Liberties of all Americans.
Some of us stood up then to protest. Some of us engaged in marches on Washington then to protest. Some of us have been consistent in our opposition to the growth and abuse of Federal power.
As far as a smaller military, many of us wish to see American troops home not only from Iraq but also from Germany, Japan, Okinawa, South Korea, the Balkans, and numerous other places. It is not our role to be the policeman for the world.
But I wonder what that has to due with the current situation? Much like Betos post which can be paraphrased as "if GWB can be an authoritarian then BHO can be the same way". Not only does that not make sense it is not quite a fair analogy. While I have no doubt that GWB would have loved to stifled dissent in the manner the current Administration is doing the simple fact is that he did not.
So the question remains. Will those who support the current Administration support the efforts of the Federal government to criminalize political speech?
Or was the expression "dissent is the highest form of patriotism" that I heard so often over the period 2002 - 2008 merely a mask for the same old "I support my team" concept of American politics that thinks Democrat or Republican means a damn thing.

Well thats not a good attitude.

Ehh, it was more of an overall necessary restructuring of previous departments and agencies with a some cross department migration with Justice, Defense, and State. EDIT: forgot Treasury, damn secret service.
I assume you mean DHS?

I really don't see how the administration is outlawing dissent. I hear people call our president a nazi, socialist, dictator etc, on a regular basis. I see tea bagging rallies on a regular basis. My Republican friends devote their entire facebook and twitter to attacking our president. However I feel like a lot of people who don't agree with the current administration have convinced themselves that they are being persecuted when that is simply not the case. If the government was the way you pretend it is you would have disappeared a long time ago or at least be posting from a work camp in North Dakota or something.
