Kaku had a dip in production in the second half of last year where he started off leading MLS in assists and then had no assists at all for quite a long time. He then didn't make Paraguay NT, which meant a lot to him to the point he changed his citizenship from Argentina. The bottom line is, your belief that he struggled because he wanted to leave is a pure speculation, given that he really wanted to make Paraguay NT and already had some struggles last year, so this was not a new phenomena to go through below average spells, and he is back to playing well again. Murillo as you said didn't have an offer that we know of and sucked, while Lawrence did and did't go, yet produced well. So, all in all, there does not seem to be an evidence to suggest plays start to suck when we get a bad offer for them and decide not to move them.

As far as Kaku's friends, I think if the club treated Kaku well otherwise, and we offer his friend good money, he would not be opposed to come here. Think about this, we spent entire last summer negotiating for Kaku, working with agents, and got him for $7 mil transfer fee, plus some other expenses to agents, etc... Then he has a very good season, makes Paraguay NT (I think he actually started there when Liga MX called), and as you just said, was MLS MVP caliber player. And we only got 1 full year out of him. So, is it unreasonable to ask 12 mil transfer fee to start negotiations with Liga MX? I don't think so.

I don't think what  RBNY asked for was unreasonable at all and I mostly agreed with their decision not to sell, given the offer.  My point was, that there is a risk in doing what RBNY did and that's having an unhappy player, which Kaku clearly was for a large part to season and it showed in his play and attitude (red cards, suspensions, twitter whining).  You saw none of the attitude issues prior to the Liga MX offer being turned down.  In retrospect, are we sure RBNY is better off having not sold Murillo and Kaku at the prices they were offered?

Interesting question and hard to say, at least in the case of Kaku. While he hasnt come back to his first half of last season form, hes been playing pretty well for the last 10-ish games, the drama seems to have died down, and hes, without question, our best option at the position he plays. We are better with him on the club and on the pitch. Which then begs the question, if he were sold at the amount originally offered by Club America, how would the club have reinvested the money and how would they have gone about replacing him? Most of us would probably tend to believe they would not have brought in a suitable replacement, if any.

In the case of Murillo, it seems like that was a missed opportunity. As talented as he is, hes been a net negative to the club with his performance this year.

Murillo as far as I know was not offered any serious transfer opportunities, so if anything this just shows that a player's performance can be degraded for other reasons. Just like Kaku's slump can be explained by many other reasons as well and is not necessarily tied whatsoever to Liga MX offer. His agent was saying something about him not being treated as a star. He was saying his pay should more. That could have resulted in not training as hard, I don't know. Perhaps he found a new girlfriend and focused too much on keeping his cardio up in the bedroom instead of a pitch in the off-season. There could be numerous explanations for the slump that he had, but it's far from the fact that Liga MX's poor offer was it.

The fact is that we had two guys who had confirmed offers: Lawrence and Kaku. Lawrence was solid, and Kaku had a slump but recovered. There is no indication that not taking a poor offer results in terrible performance by a player. And the way Kaku is playing now, no I don't think selling him for something similar that we got him for after spending entire off-season pursuing him and having him proven himself a top player in MLS, was worth it.

There was too much smoke for there not be a fire, in regards to Murillo getting offers from abroad.

Kaku's agent's talk about not be treated like a star and being underpaid were related to why he wanted to move to Liga MX, those are the same issues.

How would you feel if you thought there was a better job out there for you and you couldn't go because you had a contract.  Or, on a smaller level, you're stuck in a shitty cell phone plan because of a contract you signed.  There's a contract, you have to finish it out unless both parties agree to part on some level, but you it shouldn't be surprising when the people stuck aren't happy.

If I wanted to play for Paraguay NT and get a better contract in the future, I would certainly not try to lower my value. However, if I got a new hot girlfriend I would probably work more on my cardio in the bedroom than practicing on the pitch.
