Makes sense. I didnt even play him in FIFA. I guess needed room for Premier League Experience personnel.

Whether or not he was a fit or would ever see minutes, you don't empty a roster spot without backfilling it.  Inexcusable.

Why not?  If a player's never going to see the field and has no future with your team, why keep him around just to fill a roster spot?  I guess, theoretically, he would come in handy if Sims, Rza, Omir, Muyl and whatever wide midfielders RBII has all got hurt.  But that's an extreme longshot and I guess RBNY is willing to take the chance.

Maybe Ivan read the writing on the wall and asked out, so the team accomodated him.

You don't keep him around to fill a spot... you have a replacement lined up for that slot before you release him.   There is no point in releasing him otherwise.

More posts about this scrub after hes cut, than while he was playing.

The New York Red Bulls previously kicked around Major League Soccer as the MetroStars with limited success. But after transforming under a new banner in 2005, the Red Bulls have become a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. The club has made leaps of progress since its previous incarnation and now has its focus on bringing the league title to New York. So he could go back to (almost certainly) a much smaller paycheck, playing in front of RB2-sized crowds?

maybe if he was an American in his late 20s/early 30s on his last ever contract, sure he might sit on the bench collect the check and play when called upon.

Ivan's a young pro athlete, he wants to play, he's from Europe. i don't think assimilation was an issue, never heard anything re that, so i wouldn't blame him if he felt that it'd be best to ask out of the contract and then go back and latch on to a team that is much much closer to fam and other things.

it's not a rarity.

not to mention transfer windows in europe are closing soon.  if he wants to sign on somewhere and be a factor for this season, it would have to be ASAP.  otherwise he'd be with no playing time till Jan, and then maybe signing on as a midseason signing somewhere = no playing time either.

I'd bet he's not getting anywhere near close to 300k/yr at his next gig (just like he hadn't prior to NYRB), so it'd be weird to ask out of the fattest contract of his career prematurely, no matter how bullish he is on his qualities. Time will show, I guess.

Ivan came on to start the second half substitute against RB Leipzig in Schalke's 6-1 loss.

He's somehow playing in the Bundesliga, but it's Schalke.

Last year he was playing in the German 4th division... now in the Bundesliga?

God he was so terrible.

His first appearance all year, he's been with the second team in the 4th division all year.
