#1368848 2020 NYRBII USL Thread

Posted by Brian.MLS on 09 August 2020 - 02:13 PM

Our best prospects (Toure, Clark, Hot) have been "stolen" from other academies.

Someone out there should write a story on how the blue poseurs have been beating RB to the best local prospects. If only this team had any journalists covering it...

Hamlett getting rid of Jeff Zaun did not sit well with anyone internally. Coaches and parents left to PDA/Cedar Stars and nobody was going after the kids going to NYCFC. Add that to not having a good academy director for a long time (until just recently), that is why our academy isn't what it was just a couple years ago. Sad when you can show the pipeline of Adams, Miazga, Lade, Agudelo, Davis, Muyl, Etienne Jr., etc... and add in the dozens of academy kids that end up in our USL system (and a few elsewhere) and parents are still going elsewhere.

All that said, McCafferty is the real deal and in a few years, I think we start seeing some stars come through. We also have quite a few kids in college that should be getting HGP/NYRBII deals next year, and Clark, LaCava, Toure, Hot, Cummins, Edelman, etc... are being groomed earlier than many prior to them.

Any write up about specific players?

I see Kenan Hot at 16 made his debut and start!?
Glad we snagged him over that FC Motown team...

How did he do?
Clark?
Sowe?
CBs? - Boateng Kilwein?

Won't go into as much detail as I did in years past:
Hot looked like a true solid prospect. Good positioning and sees the game well. A bit timid at times, but its his first pro match.
Clark continues to be a bright spot. I can see him with the first team in 2022.
Sowe is unique in that he was converted to a striker. Now he is playing a bit hybrid as a wing/forward. Has a heck of a strike but he doesn't do great getting into position.
Boateng and Kilwien didn't look great. Lapsley and Kilwien's miscommunication caused the first goal 18 seconds in. Lapsley is very comparable to former HGP, original NYRBII keeper Santi Castano. Often gets too far up in the box and results in an opposing goal. That said makes some really good saves.

Should have dominated a team that has an average age under 17, fired their coach an hour before the match (formally), and allowed 18 goals in the prior 4 matches (5 from us a couple weeks ago).

#1368587 "MLS is Back" Tournament Begins 7/8

Posted by Brian.MLS on 03 August 2020 - 05:36 AM

I think the official story was he cared more about winning than developing. But there was some stuff behind the scenes, which some people might know more...

MdG got him fired during MdG's first stint here. He was replaced by someone who told the club that he was our own reserve team's head coach a few years prior. I had commented on the press release that he was never the head coach of our reserve team. He was fired in two weeks. Why? He lied about being the reserve team head coach. He was the assistant coach and was fired from that role.
Clear example of how the organization does not pay any attention to history.

More on Gio:

"It was very sour, very difficult, he said. It came in a moment where there was a lot of hard work, Actually, I remember it was a great article in Soccer America saying the [Red Bulls] Academy was one of the best at the time. The decision made did not have anything to do with the person, the reputation, my work. It just came from a person who just did not understand about soccer. He had no idea about what the connection is between a player and a club, had no understanding of the importance of being in that position to carry. He came from a different world that was difficult to understand what soccer was. It was very difficult to work with a person like that.
In the end, I took a stand, I wasnt going to accept this person to be the same way he had kept on being with his approach to the game. I am always a purist, Im 100 percent to soccer. At that point, he felt it was his decision to separate me from my job. It was very sour because it was a club that I loved being part of. I had a connection with the players. We created a great program."

#1357956 Random Player Name Thread 2020

Has a player named in one of these threads ever actually been acquired? Not being cynical, just genuinely curious.

A few...just by other MLS teams...

#1357877 Kemar Lawrence wants out

Posted by Brian.MLS on 11 December 2019 - 09:19 PM

Has there ever been a contract holdout in MLS?

The two I can remember are Lee Nguyen with New England a couple years ago and Roy Lassiter back in late 90s, early 2000s.

#1357857 Hamlett is in so far over his head

Posted by Brian.MLS on 11 December 2019 - 03:29 PM

Hamlett has pretty much destroyed every part of this organization.

First team: obvious.
USL team: Force an atrocious Jorgensen to be played in each match (Woly isn't going to not play him given the cost), loan out starter Marcus Epps, do nothing with those funds and leave nobody to replace him as we fall apart in the last ten matches, then keep guys like Boateng and Elney on the USL roster for next year but let guys like Koffi or Louro go rather than offer USL deals and still have not signed Lema or Stroud, who are All USL team selections to either the first team or USL team.
U23s: Was the worst U23 season since the team started in 2010. First time with a losing record. Horrible flow and consistency. Most of the guys playing regularly were not from the academy (outside Skylar Conway and Brian Saramago), thus not HGP eligible.
Academy: How do you "build from within" when Hamlett fired his top academy coach, causing a wrongful termination lawsuit, another couple coaches to leave, and parents fleeing with their younger kids that recognize how poorly run this organization is right now?
We once had the most dominant academy in the country, now our U17s and U19s struggled through the ICC Futures tournament.

Then there is MdG and all the issues that he has done zilch to fix, then wonders why he has to lie about why he cant fill RBA.

It was an impressive first half from RBS.
Crazy that a win would have knocked out the best team in the PL and they put a bunch of shots on target early on.

That second goal they gave up though? Ouch.

#1357607 Schedule 2020

Should be on at least 6 points from those matches.

Add in this is the first year in a while we don't have CCL I expect best XI in each of those.

With our current roster, we will be lucky to get 1 point.

Is there a list of college players thst are graduating but are from rbny youth teams?

The ones I'm aware of (where I can see them in 2020):
Brian Saramago (potentially first team HGP)
Barry Sharifi (NYRBII)
Jared Gilbey (NYRBII)
Ryan Minchagos (detached but came back to U23s)
Sean Teixeira (NYRBII defender)
Kyle Perno (eh. maybe)
Mason Deeds (once invited to multiple preseason, top 3 prospect, dropped dramatically since going to GTown then Penn State, NYRBII but possibly same fate as Borges)?
Ethan Lochner (just went to grad school, not sure if he is getting looks)
Pierre Reedy (NYRBII, lost two years with injuries, but back now).

Not HGP eligible due to detachment, but academy ties:
Samad Bounthong - likely a late draft pick from someone. Was one of three players from Marist to earn honors. The other two were Sam Ilin and Allen Gavilanes. Our Academy twitter account retweeted the picture of the three of them and congratulated Ilin and Gavilanes, no mention of Bounthong.
Cameron Harr
Sam Carter

Steve Shak begs to differ

While I would agree Steve Shak was the worst first overall pick, at least he played, and decent at times.
Even Janos Loebe, Zeiko Lewis and Leo Stoltz did enough to earn minutes with the USL team as first round picks.

Boateng was awful in the few minutes he played... with the USL team.

#1357493 Official: Robles to Miami

Posted by Brian.MLS on 02 December 2019 - 09:16 PM

"When I sit here in this position thats my ultimate goal: how do I construct a team that will bring the New York Red Bulls an MLS Cup," Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett said on a conference call on Thursday afternoon. "That is the thing that is at the forefront of everything we think about and these are tough decisions you make and I think its part of it. Our main goal is how do we construct something that can help us win championships and I understand (fan frustration) but I cant make emotional decisions."

Yet clearly, you did.

#1357415 2019 Re-Entry Draft

Posted by Brian.MLS on 27 November 2019 - 05:44 PM

Does it even matter? How often are MLS starting goaltenders injured for long stretches of time? I bet this guy barely plays for the first team, just how Meara barely did when Robles was here.

Ryan Meara barely played because of a long stretch injury to Ryan Meara.

#1357381 What would it take for Red Bull to sell?

Even the SJ Quakes ownership gets it that you need to open up your purse to be competitive in this version of MLS. WTF does it take for our us to get this sort of treatment??
