I'm not a Miller-hater as he's better than most starting LB's. However, I don't know if a match against the worst MLS team is a good example to use that he's a great player.

The guy is a National Team player, so I'd like to think he'd be held to a higher standard than a journeyman like Stephen Keel. On Wednesday he committed the ridiculous foul where he barreled into Akpan, which resulted in a PK (yes, it was outside of the penalty area). You have to question his soccer IQ.

There's no doubt that he's exposed against the better teams. The SJ playoff game has been dissected enough, as he was one of the major culprits.

Out of our first choice starters, he's probably the worst at his position. At least among outfield players. If Sutton is our #1 keeper, then I might say otherwise. In Backe's system, Miller gets exposed a lot, especially with weak passes, not playing the ball early enough, and recovering on defense.

But good right sided midfielders are way more common than good left backs, so when Miller is upfield, he has to chase the play a lot. I think he looks worse than he would be if he stayed at home and played more like other MLS left backs.

I'm not delighted with Miller, but there aren't many players in MLS who could do what he is asked to do. I'd love to get Demarcus Beasley to replace him but we definitely don't have the salary cap room for him.

A couple of things to take into consideration when analyzing Miller as an individual player and as a player in the Backe system.

His ball skills are well above average than most MLS left backs. He knows and can play the ball on the ground and makes a quick transition from defense to offense after recovering the ball. He is a very good overlapping left back and his play does not end at the 3/4 line as most MLS left backs do.

Now, he does get beaten once in a while and is suspect on set plays, but he is not the only one in MLS.

As per the complains that he gets stuck upfield too often and is caught out of position: In Backe's system, the two full backs push up constantly to create numbers in midfield or to widen the field. Once that takes place, it is the left/right midfielder's duty to offer defensive cover, plus in the case of the RB, we drop a holding mid between the center backs to create a three man backline. The issue is that Lindpere is too happy to push up at the same time and when we loose possession we have the two players on that side out of position, Miller by design and Lindpere by lack of discipline. Miller is the fastest of the two and that is why you always see him running like crazy to offer support and why it looks like he was caught out of position.

Lindpere's lack of discipline also causes a cascading effect when other teams counter. The other RB midfielders have to shift to cover our left side and depending on how many players from the other team attack, it can create a numerical disadvantage. Also, it should be noted that Ream is in charge (by design) of covering the left side when the other team counters and most of the time he does a good job, but he has trouble with quicker players and balls played behind him. By design, that has nothing to do with Miller.

All those who are complaining about Miller's play, should look at him closely once he plays for the Costa Rica national team. You will then realize that he is not a bad player as some make him to be.

Cheers

I like Roy Miller. Also, don't refer to people as 'tards. I don't know who you are or your level of intellect, but using language like that doesn't bode well for you.

Are we really that PC???? Yes I have two retarded cousins so I can say that...

Of all the games where Miller would deserve a 7 rating or more, it's this one. WTF, metrofanatic player raters. more like player haters. Give credit where credit is due. All the irrational haters should GFTO.

Fantastic through ball for the assist to Henry. I gave a 7.

Miller is one of the better LBs in MLS but that's not saying much. He usually sucks but had a good game today other than his shaky start. It seems all the usual crappy players are having at least one good game (see Dax, Ballouchy and Miller) this season so far.

well FWIW, he was at 6.2 when I posted earlier, and now he's at 6.8 at this moment. Let's hope for another late surge; I think he's earned it today.

12 games or so in...i still don't get the Miller hate or understand the underrating on the match ratings. He is pretty damn good IMO. Is there some other MLS left back out there that is better?
