#1372046 Metro - Miami Game Thread

They had us on the ropes for 10-15 minutes before the third goal and looking like they'd get a second for sure, so the scoreline is a bit misleading.

That's true, but to give this team some credit, we created a lot of really good chances in this game, while they had some, but a lot less. Long, Jorgensen 4 times, Barlow 3 times, had chances that should have been put away in addition to the 4 goals. They had a few too, but we probably doubled them up or more on great opportunities to score. If you add up Barlow's and now Jorgey's chances this whole year, it's got be some statistical improbability they combined for 0 goals. Well, either that or they are just absolutely piss poor finishers.

Easy there, Sir Alex. We don't do sensible personnel decisions in these parts.

I am not even saying this will make Metro great again as the talent is still lacking, but not putting fans to sleep would be a welcome start.

Mines is one of our few players who shows an interest in attacking (even if he sucks at it...but give him time).  Please start him.

I don't think he actually sucked at it. He was only given minutes in one game, where he played extremely well and earned an assist. As a reward his minutes disappeared. Omir got his, but continued to be inconsistent. Mines actually played well in limited time he was given. I simply do not understand why not start him and play him a lot more. I mean it's not like there is a huge logjam of great players. Take out Nealis, add Mines, and play 4231. Give start to Tetteh for at least 45 mins to see what he can do. I feel that alone will make a big difference in our ability to keep the ball and create chances.

I'd prefer Royer over Valot or Mines, but otherwise a return to the good old 4231 seems like an obvious decision, not an unpopular one.

It does seem obvious to pretty much all but Carnell. Though we should get both Royer and Mines on the wings and Kaku in the middle. Tetteh lone striker. Let's see what this team can do by playing the best players we have in the best formation we can put them in.

FWIW, as over-rated as possession numbers can be, and say what you want about Davis, our possession falls apart without him.   And since we have no attacking punch, possession matters to us.  Yearwood should fix that once he gets acclimated, but Casseres is not a strong possession guy.  I haven't looked at his passing numbers,  but I doubt they are good.

Even without being acclimated Yearwood and Valot covered the position as good as Davis did if not better. Having 5 defenders and 2 strikers, not letting a guy say like Mines create and instead having Nealis defend I suspect is what's causing lack of possession in midfield rather than replacing Davis with equal or superior player in Yearwood.

They didnt go into the season planning to play that formation, it was out of necessity.

When you have more talent, you have more options, out of necessity, injuries, or whatever else. This was the most pivotal game of 2017 season. With Dax instead of Davis as a starter, and Davis on the bench we would have had a much better chance to concede one less or score one more and advance than with Davis as a starter and no quality midfielder on the bench. There was a place for an upgrade in starting line up over Davis and upgrade of the bench too. When you have more talent, you have better options. When you get rid of talent for nothing back, there are fewer good options. If you keep doing this, you ultimately end up where we are just now.

#1371613 BWP signs with LAFC

We got good value for Dax, at the time $400k in allocation money was one of the highest valued trades in MLS history. That didn't last long as expansion clubs started to dish out allocation money like candy, but at the time it was a sizable return. And as much as I love Dax, he hasn't been the dominant player he was for us since he left.

The Kljestan trade was more suspect but we still got at least something. We took a flyer on two young guys, Rivas and Redding, who unfortunately flopped so hard we might as well have gotten nothing. That's the risk with young players sometimes though. And like Dax, Kljestan has regressed a bit since leaving.

BWP is the only one where we truly lost something for nothing. It was essentially a salary dump, but what good is that if you don't give that salary to another player...

That's an interesting way to look at these trades. We dumped talent, but got some money we didn't use. Who cares we got allocation money if we didn't end up using it for a better player? Ended up with inferior player Davis for 3 years as a starter, and a weaker bench than if Davis was there. And literally paid money for a team to take Sacha for two guys we didn't use. And btw, LA wanted Sacha too, so he was actually in some demand, like Dax, yet we ended up with nothing. Good value is when you trade players and end up with better ones as a result. When you trade them and don't get back better players as a result, you didn't exactly "sell". You just lost.

Duncan & Pendant were definitely playing further up the pitch than the CBs, I just thought they weren't involved in the attack enough.

Given their lack of involvement it felt there there were definitely 5 defenders with weak midfield.

Duncan is young, cheap and domestic.  There is no reason to replace someone like that, whose capable of being an effective starter.  No reason to do anything with Duncan, Egbo and Pendant.  There are so many other issues of greater importance.

We are actually in agreement here, these guys are fine, we need to upgrade plenty of other places. I was commenting on a point that we need to be building a team around them, like they are some star players.

He seems to have done what everyone said he needed to do, which was bulk up a bit to handle MLS level physicality.

Here is a buffing part. Ben didnt really get an opportunity to play all season. Then against NE he get one chance to play minutes, and he assists on a goal, shows one on one ability, and generally looks dangerous with the ball. He also happens to be 20 years old and we dont have a starter at the position.

His reward is 20 mins combined in next two games. Why would you give Stroud a start over him, when in one game Mines was allowed to get minutes he did significantly more than much older Stroud with several opportunities?

I can think of no fringe benefit or byproduct worthy of a loss to the Scum, especially at home.

This is the lone exception.

What is Kaku's English proficiency at this point?  I do not think I have ever seen him speak English in an interview.

Is Thelwell scared to fire Armas or something?

Really makes you question Thelwell's intelligence that he hasn't fired Armas yet.

How bout now? :)

#1370869 When will the strikers score a goal or get an assist this year?

Posted by Borats on 04 September 2020 - 05:07 AM

He could have had a tap-in last night,
if he had not been 10-15 yards behind the play.
Someone squeezed a roller in from the left.
It rolled right across the goal, no one there.

That was Jorgey who actually made that cross. He gets only a few mins every game and doesnt look any worse than Barlow. Yet he is 5-6 years younger, not even 20 yet. Time to give the guy some more mins. Barlow wont get any better. Jorgey may.
