Super Mario? I guess our next stadium hype guy will be Lakitu. At least my oldest will be thrilled.

I have fond memories of sitting in the back at TOB on Saturdays with the TV above my head playing Bundesliga matches in the afternoon. Seemed like every weekend Gomez was banging in another goal for Stuttgart.

Imagine Mario Gomez traveling across the Atlantic Ocean to see his new project and witnessing Tom Barlow.

What is his qualifications? Has he managed anywhere since he stopped playing?

He only retired from playing a year ago, and has been doing just TV stuff since.   His qualifications are his playing career and his long-time friendship with Mintzlaff.

According to once a metro, its less global, and more western hemisphere. He'll be in charge of coordinating NY and Bragantino.

Weird. This seems more in Thelwell's wheel house, particularly with his experience in the Portuguese market when at Wolves and the fact there are two GMs in NY right now.

As someone who is in favor of ending the Scrooge McDuck-ian embarrassment that is RB's ownership of Metro, I see this as a positive. There's no way adding an executive with no experience helps the keep the boat from sinking.

My baseless guess - Mario will oversee creation of an RB team in LigaMX....

Um....how would Mario Gomez help build our Team when he is unfamiliar with the intricacies of MLS, let alone, how the American player is developed or lack there-of compared to the traditional European clubs? What does he know about Latin America? Again, pigeon-holing a Euro to our side of the World. I still don't understand why we cannot recruit from this side of the Atlantic!!

Agree 100% - I'd want to poach someone from LigaMX who has SA connections. Or someone who has MLS knowledge from within the organization - I'd guess Thelwell can speak a touch of Portuguese?

I think there is more to this than we are hearing...

They arent looking foe someone to be in the weeds its high level type of position big picture thinking and coordinating. Thelwell job is to coordinate all sporting things at Red Bull so scouting academy etc. hamlet does the day to day gm stuff paperwork. Gomez would focus on building the synergy between bragantino and Red Bull with the larger global team so it works as a true multinational soccer conglomerate. Thats how I read the role at least and how rangnick described is goal when he was about to do it

Id rather we pay a game-changer DP the big bucks.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
