I'm not sure lulling the rest of the league into a false sense of security is a thing.

For three years we've been complaining that Marsch's direct play is too easily beaten by a well-prepared team sitting deep. I've tried to read up on how you actually adjust to that, and the one and only common answer I've seen is that you need to use possession in the attacking third to pull the other team out and create a little bit of space.

If we're asking to go back to Marsch's style now, it means that we either don't trust Armas to execute the new game plan or we've been complaining about the wrong thing this whole time.

The complaints with Marsch was that if the press was failing to generate offense, he had no other answers.  I don't think there were many people wanting to abandon the high press, just have some additional ideas against bunkering teams.  Under Armas, we seem to focusing more on possession, even when we don't need to.

We should be a high press, high "energy" team that comes out flying from the first whistle.  And, then go to the possession style of play that Armas has introduced, if the opponent is bunkering.

Possessing on offense is great. I definitely prefer it over the dump and chase approach. More chances created by us at the expense of chances created by causing turnovers is fine.

I think we/some are questioning why we have basically abandoned high pressing (in the last 1-2 games anyway) when we don't have the ball when it clearly was a team strength for years and early on this season. It's perfectly understandable if the thought is to preserve people's legs at this late stage of the season. If that's not the reason, it would be puzzling; for one thing, it isn't a binary choice between barely pressing and going full tilt for 90 minutes. Picking your spots is also fine.

It seems to me, glass half full, that it is a deliberate change to A) rest legs and B) practice a style that can be more effective in the playoffs, against teams who will likely play more conservatively and in games that will more likely be decided with lower scores.    Wide open, 3-1 or 4-2 games get less and less typical the closer you get to the Cup final.

I'm inclined to agree.

The concern here would be, if we need it, can we just flip the switch and high press like we did to start the year?

When is the last Armas game they pressed really well? Genuine question. Home v LAFC?

If Armas has been able to keep the press / pressing fitness strong while developing a posession approach, AND keeping legs fresh well that'd be damn impressive, and exciting for the playoffs. Just need more deadliness in the final third, leading to more and better shots.

The optimist in me says that Armas is just tooling around with this possession game so we have a different mode during the post season. The Metro fan in me says he goes one mode regardless of the actual game circumstances.

Opening whistle? Press the shit out of them.

Get that opening goal? Sit back and once you win it go straight for the jugular.

Down a goal? Play the Armas Project and pull them out of their defensive shape.
