I'm not letting this go. When he played soccer with Valley Secession United, he always had more energy, a smile, and a wicked shoulder-push to make sure you could never get to the ball. It wasn't personal, it was fun.

My thoughts are with his family, and that includes all of us in the squad.

Unlike a lot of folks here, I only knew Jair briefly. I first met him at my first day at VSU. I was barely a LARS newb, couldn't play soccer to save my life. Basically I had 'newb' written all over me.

Generally everyone was friendly - but no one went out of their way to make me feel welcome like Jair. He came up, remembered my name, took the time to talk to me, invite me to hang out at the next game, etc. I take my relationship with LARS very seriously, and no one kick-started that like Jair did.

My heart aches for those he left behind, including all of his LARS family.

Hi all.

I am still moved by this. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I want to say, to Jair and his family, that I thank him from the bottom of my heart. He was doing what he believed in, and, as I type this, I am at a loss for words. His service and sacrifice, like those before him, are constantly on my mind. I am able to do what I do because of selfless people like Jair and his comrades. I never met him, but one day, and there will be the day, that I will shake your hand. God Bless.

I came upon this thread some months ago and was drawn back to it today.

My thanks, my prayers, and my thoughts to Jair's family, friends, and fellow Galaxy fans.

Not normally a tequila drinker, but I have a little every August 1st.

I figure by 2047 I'll have put away as much as he and I did in one night...

A couple of weeks ago I was getting something out of the closet in the den and Sam saw my dress greens hanging there.

He asked "What exactly did you do in the army, Dad?"

Assuming he meant my 'job' and not the booze and au pairs, I told him that my unit cleared minefields and detonated explosives so the guys that came after us would be safe.

He said, "So if you were still in the army, you would've saved Jair."

Bastard.

The strange part is sometimes your mind does work that way... even as an adult. I used to read in the paper about guys I knew dying in some shitty desert and thinking, I wish I was with him...I could have done something...blah blah blah.

You have to keep telling yourself that that isn't the way it works. Those thoughts are for 8 year-olds. And take comfort in the fact that you did what you could when you were there.

Love you, JR.
