Leiweke on the free DP spot, Juninho, Sarvas, Keane, Donovan and more

Although Beckham will depart the club next month, Leiweke reveals that conversations about the Galaxy’s next step have been ongoing for months.

“Bruce, Chris Klein and I have spent a lot of time talking in the last three or four months about where we go next. You know, we’re very fortunate to have Juninho and Sarvas. We’re not lacking for good creative midfielders and they’re young and hopefully this gives us resources to keep that nucleus intact,” said Leiweke. “We’re lucky we have Robbie Keane, he makes this a much easier transition, we’re lucky we have Landon Donovan. Frankly, I think from a player standpoint, I don’t think we miss a beat next year. I love David, but I think David would be the first to tell you that with Juninho and Sarvas, we got a pretty potent midfield, so I don’t think you’re going to see slippage here.”

And of that designated player spot? Leiweke admits that the club is going to look for the right fit, not just the first player that comes along.

“Yes, it does give us a DP slot, but don’t expect us to rush out and go fill it. We’re going to fill it with the right guy and it’s the right guy for this marketplace, the right guy for Bruce and the team that he and Chris want to build,” said Leiweke. “Chris and I have spent a lot of time talking about where we go find that next guy. It’s going to have to be the right guy not the first guy, which means maybe we’re patient for a year or two until we get the right guy.”

So it seems they are counting that Juninho remains a G.
Don't mind if the G's wait for the right DP to come along rather than just get one so they'll have 3.

Good news.

I'm good with that too.

Plus, Mike Magee is like a bonus DP at a nice discount.

I'm willing to bet a lot of this is just posturing to try and better their negotiating position with potentials.

Remember that this is Leiweke posturing on his own behalf, too.

As soon as the G's/AEG are sold - he's out of a job.

keep the inside® infos coming

more from LA Times

  • G's were ain talks with Ronaldinho again, before he signed a contract extension last month

  • now they focus on a Latin DP (thus Kaka not Lampard)

Leiweke "Look, if Wayne Rooney wants to come, we'll make an exception. But the reality for us right now, our thinking, is … iconic players that have a special relationship with the Hispanic community,"

  • Keane, is under contract for two more seasons with an option that could keep him here through 2015.

  • Midfielders Mike Magee and Juninho — on loan from Sao Paulo — will be out of contract at the end of the year, as will goalkeeper Josh Saunders, whose future with the team is further clouded by the Galaxy's interest in trading for Chivas USA keeper Dan Kennedy.

  • Gonzalez, DeLaGarza, Dunivant and Franklin is signed for another year.

  • Midfielder Marcelo Sarvas and forward Edson Buddle are also signed, and midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson has an option for next season that may prove too expensive for the Galaxy to pick up.

the 2012 season's over, the trade window open and the re-entry draft not too far away...

Before I start rambling: Gonzalez incredible fast recovery, not to mention return to the top, has been unbelievable!

the Kennedy talk certainly is interesting, but not surprising. Saunders had an inconsistent season at best (even aside the personal thing and the Gonzo injury, superb one moment, followed by shaky/uncertain ones).
However why would they across the hall let go of one if not their best player and prospect?

  • Can't be the only one to want a return of Kevin Hartman (whether that's in a playing/mentoring/future/coaching role), since Dallas doesn't seem to want his services any longer.
  • keep Juninho
  • resign Magee
  • send the Swede away (just fast but not really much else, can be had cheaper and without an INT slot too)
  • shop Buddle and see if you get value.
  • use Villarreal, Jimenez, Garcia, Meyer and the Reserves/Academy prospects
  • wait for the right DP(s)

Thanks to Zero, we confirmed Omar Gonzalez has a year left on his contract.

And has "No intention on signing a new contract and wishes to test free agency". We've got one chance to make history in MLS with a three peat and that's 2013. Go big or go home.

Some more chatter from Steve Davis.

Frank Lampard to the Galaxy? Not so much

Word from those who know say any media types still peddling the Frank Lampard to Galaxy story need to tap the brakes.

The Galaxy, says one source, has very little interest.

Kaka? Yes, for sure. AEG president Tim Leiweke is on the record about that one. But the Lampard thing seems to have grown a pair of false legs.

They clubs was, on the other hand, very interested earlier this year in Giovani dos Santos and Didier Drogba, the source said, as MLS held substantive talks with representatives of both.

The Galaxy was willing to go up to $9 million a year for Drogba … which just wasn’t going to trump the ridiculous $15 million he’s earning in China.

Josh Saunders out at Galaxy?

We all saw Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders more or less evaporate on the goal line Saturday as Calen Carr slammed the Houston Dynamo into the lead. It was hardly Saunders’ best moment, and it probably will drive home the final, proverbial nail. Word is that the Galaxy are finished with Saunders, who missed time this year while in the league’s substance abuse treatment program.

Word is that the Galaxy would really like to find a way to grab Dan Kennedy from down the Home Depot Center hall. Chivas USA’s besieged goalkeeper may not fit the new profile for the Goats. Or maybe he will – who really knows with that mess of a club? This much is certain: if the Galaxy could pull off this one, it would be a true coup. (And a pretty doggone good deal for Kennedy, too, who would fall break ties with the league’s wackiest, most unstable team for a spot with the two-time defending champs.)

Bruce Arena showed up … where?

I have never quite decided if Bruce Arena loves to hate the media … or if he just enjoys poking the media bear, and also enjoys a good joust.

Either way, Arena has never seemed to embrace that part of the American soccer coaching experience. He never seems to relish speaking to the media (which isn’t hard to understand considering all of the silly questions the man has endured through the years, especially a few years back before the media world evolved into a better place for soccer.)

Any-whose, it was downright shocking to see Arena show up Thursday at a media happy hour. He was jovial and seemed quite happy to be there.

The Galaxy will be going somewhere … soon

The Los Angeles Galaxy will not be sitting still. Very soon – by the end of the week, perhaps – they will be off on another check-cashing tour to some far-flung land. Not that this is a shocker; the Galaxy have done the same over the last couple of years. The surprise is why the club seems ever intent on making it a surprise. Look for an announcement in the next couple of days.

Kennedy would be awesome. Goats could use Buddle, no? Maybe a nice Sweedish winger?

Dos Santos?! Glad that one fell by the wayside...

Kennedy would be an upgrade over Saunders. The Goats want to return to the days of "This is futbol" BS, so maybe the G's pick him up on the cheap... like give them back David Junior Lopes cheap...

If you're not creepin', you're not trying...

Let's hope they complete that German tour they cancelled in 09. Or anywhere in Euroland.

'Cause getting players from the goats has worked so well for us before? I too would rather bring back Hartman. But definitely we'll want to keep BAMF and Juninho if at all possible.

[*]Midfielder Marcelo Sarvas and forward Edson Buddle are also signed, and midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson has an option for next season that may prove too expensive for the Galaxy to pick up.

Sarvas has never been anywhere any great length of time before, did he? I hope the Gs will prove a place he stays a while. Buddle: The Sequel was better than The Return Of The Fish, but that's about the best I can say for it, and I was really excited to see him come back (as I was Fish. Oh, well...). Wilhelmsson has a cool name but should probably be thanked for participating and sent on his way.

Otherwise, from the article Ben linked to:

...the team expects Gonzalez, the MLS Cup most valuable player, to draw loan interest from several European clubs.

For fucking fucks' sake.
