APs final take on the World Cup

"Empty seats at kickoff for most games would steadily fill by halftime. There was evidence and anecdotes of residents in Qatar being taken to games and offered free tickets, and the host nation's loudest cheer squad was fans brought from Lebanon and Syria.

When tournament attendance topped 3.4 million, it was unclear and went unanswered if the total included all the volunteers, catering and security staff who clocked in to work in stadiums."

Oddly noticed sections of white / empty seats at even some matches in knock out rounds hum

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Not unusual, especially when big teams are eliminated and their fans go home. In 1994, the Germans all left after being upset by Bulgaria, resulting in several thousand seats suddenly available at Giants Stadium for the semi-final. Not all sold, so many were given away to local clubs, IIRC.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

The organizers did a bang-up job making sure the seats in camera view were filled. Not all of the empty looking seats where empty. From a wide angle shot it looked so but a closer angle showed local folks occupying the seats wearing the local garments - white head wear and white robe.

I was able to scoop up eight tickets that after re-sale allowed me to break even for what I was out of pocket for the 7 seven games I paid for.

I was just happy enough to buy tickets for the QF & SF, after already having a pair for the first 5 games.
