All due respect to LD, but this to me is bush league. Shouldn't we let a players spot on the bench get cold before we permanently name an annual award after them? You need to wait a least 5-10 years to even have the perspective to make this call.

Awesome, I love it!

The New York Red Bulls previously kicked around Major League Soccer as the MetroStars with limited success. But after transforming under a new banner in 2005, the Red Bulls have become a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. The club has made leaps of progress since its previous incarnation and now has its focus on bringing the league title to New York. Normally I would agree, but I can see why the exception was made

Good idea by the league but it seems premature considering LD just retired.

Had they waited like 2-3 years it would fill less 'weird.'

Still, I think its a better name than the Volkswagen MVP thing or whatever sponsorship deal they had earlier.

I have no problem with this, unless Landon unretires and wins the award again

Surprised MLS didn't name the award after a sponsor.

In fact, surprised MLS hasn't sold league naming rights to a sponsor.

"The Barclays MaLeSo League"

"The Continental (Tire) League"

Can't be an integrity issue.

I can see how maybe they should have waited a few years, but otherwise I think it's fully deserved.  Landon Donovan was THE star of the league.

Be funny if Landon signed with an NASL team (one is likely coming to  LA in 2016) and helped them compete against MLS.

Good for him and shows MLS as a joke once again by naming an award after a still active player, there's a reason why many teams/leagues wait a certain number of years before retiring jerseys or honoring former greats.
