I'd take Martinez if we find ourselves with another $1M in GAM that's about to expire, and he's willing to take a 75% paycut. Otherwise I think those wages can be better spent on a player without so much risk of his body not keeping up with Red Bull Soccer.

I would take him but Atlanta would have to give up Tyler wolf or a top young prospect, and a combination of some draft picks or international slot to be equal in value to Josef's 3m salary.

You're thinking as RB executives.

A deadly finisher like Martinez is THE missing piece for us at the moment and as a fan with no money at stake, I'd jump at the opportunity.

Sure, at no discount, we'd like a better younger option with more upside and no injury history, but I don't trust this team to find a striker to bring us over the top on the evidence of the last 10 years, other than BWP who was a once in a lifetime find.  Also, those players are not cheap at all either (e.g. Klimala at 5M).

Now, is Josef to NYRB actually happening? No way in hell, but I find it strange that people are basically saying no to him even in hypotheticals. The alternatives for 2023 at the moment are Klimala, Manoel and Barlow. Yeah, I'd take expensive injury risk on RB's tab, thank you.

Thats the 2017-19 Martinez. Since 2020, hes been injured or average. And at $3M in salary, we can pick up someone his age that has a similar track record, but has shown more recently.

He's been quite decent in 2022. 8G/4A in 1300 minutes (12 starts only) on a bad team. 1 penalty goal in the 8.

And I'm definitely not certain about your second sentence - it's not just the salary, we'd have to pay a significant fee that's even more implausible for our team.

P.s. I'd be worried about playing style fit (lol) and him destroying the locker room, but the arguments so far have been mostly against his large salary. It's not our money! And the opportunity cost is the next Klimala/Jorgensen...

And yes, buying low does require some risk, by definition.

Im not saying Martinez is bad, just expensive for a guy that might be great, but as likely to be injured or average.

Do you think there is an MLS team that is desperate enough to use their dp slot and pay him 3m?

I dont think there is because you can find someone else without the baggage, and injury history for the same salary and age.

The argument that some of us have made is that you might be able to squeeze something out of Atlanta. It would be a Savy move if the front office pulled it off.

I guess we'll see. It's a high risk/high reward move. I wouldn't be surprised if no team/FO executive goes for it, but I am shocked to see fans of a team with no goalscoring forwards have the perspective of "only if both he and Atlanta take a huge discount". :)

Anyway, fun topic to discuss but obviously no chance of him ending up in Harrison.

You'd expect him to play motivated in 2023 given it's a contract year for him.  Does MLS allow for 'loans' below a player's salary?

When there's a chance I would love if Metro could get Andrés Gómez and Johnny Cardoso and Ricardo Márquez!!!! Those additions I think would give this side players that are gritty and can press and can play with the ball at their feet and create for others...

In Márquez they'd get a speedy striker that is good in the air and can finish with either foot...

In Gómez they get a right winger that can score in bunches and is already being compared to Luiz Diaz and Tino Asprilla

Cardoso is solid and for a defensive mid can distribute the ball very well.
I just want Metro to win a title sometime in my lifetime.
