I was reading an article on ESPNFC and I saw this comment:

Mads Olesen ·

This is unrelated, but I can't find a way to contact ESPN with a tip...

Recently it has been revelaed that New York Red Bulls in 2011 paid $200.000 to a player agent to circumvent the salary cap, with the understanding that the money was the player's.

The agent never forwarded the money to the player, thus the trial.

The player is Jan Gunnar Solli and he won the lawsuit, backed by then-Red Bull coaches Jan Halvor Halvorsen and Hans Backe who testified that it was to circumvent the cap.

Then I found these articles explaining the case (thank you Google Translate):

We know MLS rules can be funny, but do you think the league knew? Although most of who were involved are long gone, will this "scandal" hurt the team?

if true, MLS will probably can and should sanction the team.  maybe they'll have us play in NASL for a few years so we can beat up on the Cosmos multiple times per year

I just think Garber gives a wink and this shit happens all the time. The rules don't mean much.

There were many cases where a player was clearly being paid above the cap, especially pre-DP... The problem is if RB went behind the backs of the other owners, that might upset them.

If we were willing to do this tactic then I'm actually pretty disappointed with how little talent the teams those years had!

Nope.

I'd wager it's going on with SWP this season. Just have Euro RB entity cut cheks to someone in the UK.

Bet we did it with Peggy too.

It's bullshit. But you know what else is bullshit?

Changing league rules so Seattle can sign Dempsey

Changing league rules so NE can sign Jones

Changing league rules so LA can sign Dos Santos

Allowing NYC to CHEAT to sign ViIla

We could probably get in real trouble for this.

But what can they realistically do? Cut our salary budget? Take away draft picks? Reduce our allocation money amount? Something to our homegrown number?

My norwegian is pretty rusty, but I think it was a "sign-on" fee that was supposed to be paid out at the end of the contract. So my guess is doesn't fall under the cap rules. So it wouldn't affect the team at all, I think.

We could get in trouble for this because our team's owner doesn't slobber the Don's knob like LA, NYCFCXYZ, and Seattle.
