In Carlisle, the Friday before Christmas is known as Black Eye Friday. Traditionally, workers in the town get the last afternoon before the pre-Christmas weekend off so they can go to the pub for a fight etc etc ... been going on for years :pint:

We should meet the GM on Friday with matching black eyes. Now that's solidarity.

Been years since I had or gave anyone one. I hate wearing glasses. It ruins everything.

Pregame pints 15. Ticket to the game 60. Carlsburg, Meatpie and Crisps 16. Seeing an American score on another American at a Premier League match in England; Priceless.

I accidentally punched the woman in the face when she was trying to wake me up the other day.

What the hell is it with Jersey natives waking up in the morning and punching people?

You don't have any guns at home do you?

and the results are in ....

45 arrested
Published on 22/12/2007

POLICE made 45 arrests in north and west Cumbria last night in a quieter than usual so-called ‘Black Eye Friday’.

Twenty-six arrests were made in Carlisle city centre, ranging from drunken disorder to possession of drugs and two assaults.

A dispersal order meant patrols could move people on to prevent trouble in a large populated area.

A number of warnings were given under the police’s new powers, with two people arrested for breaching their warning.

Inspector Chris Wickwar said: “You’ve got a lot of people in one place, probably more than a normal Friday evening, and we were kept busy all night, until 5am.”

Four arrests were made in Penrith for offences of disorder.

In west Cumbria, 15 people were in custody in Workington this morning following arrests last night – five in connection with assault, three criminal damage, two affray, two disorder and one drunk and disorderly.

Other alleged offences are taking a vehicle without consent and drink driving.

Inspector Martin Connolly said this was normal after a Friday night.

Landlords, cabbies and night-time takeaways in the area have joined forces with police to warn that yuletide yobs will be banned from all licensed premises.

For the first time in Carlisle police had the power to confiscate alcohol in two large areas of the city – the centre and the St James Road area of Denton Holme.

In the past, the day when most workers finish for Christmas has earned the infamous nickname ‘Black Eye Friday’ because of the drunken violence and disorder that has followed.

Why pay $1000+ for transporation, lodging (though I guess the jail cell may reduce this expense) et al when you can just get drunk, get in to a bar brawl and be arrested at your local watering hole?

This is why you're all legal. You discourage yourself from the nonsensical and the expense, while the rest of go live life.

Would you say the same about the running of the bulls? If not, why?

Well, neither really appeals to me to begin with so I would not be inclined to do either in the first place.

But, I will bite: is there a closer place to run with the bulls other than Pamplona? And did Hemingway write about it?

Not trying to be cute here, and I may have missed something, but I am not following you. What does not wanting to go to Carlisle to get in to a bar brawl or run with the bulls in Pamplona have to do with being rich?

Those things cost money and there's typically an unknown factor of exactly how much they will cost (if you do them right). By not going and staying home because you have no interest in going, you are undoubtably saving money, credit card debt, and future interest payments on that accrued debt.

Meaning that you are undoubtably the richest person on the boards next to the other guy doing the same thing.
