You need to be able to do that in order to do the things that Ruud wants to do."

Ruud obviously has a firm handle on what he wants and what that looks like. This is the most intentional approach I've seen since the late nineties.

Does that mean we've essentially freed up about $800,000?!?!? Because if it does, we're seriously in a good position to make a number of good signings!

Seems that way...add 800K to the cap, or $800 K to the buying pot, whichever way you want to spend it. It's pretty freaky the way things are going just like several of us hoped...so far.

Pssst! CG...do you think they're peeking at our conversations?

If they are, I seriously hope they contact me with a job offer, for this team, I'd work for peanuts.... minimum wage peanuts, but peanuts nonetheless

Minimum wage just went up to eight bucks an hour.

If the gig is full-time, that's $16,640, just short of what Randolph and Harden made last year.

This thead should be of good use for all kinds of $cap, trade, transfer calculations, sepculations and give a good overview over the current situation.

I'm sure I've made some mistakes in my calculation so please DO correct me and I'll update that post continuingly.

ps: if you ask yourself, why the hell I do such things. I like Line Ups, Speculation, Thinkering etc and have way too much time for such things which I actually should work... :P

Current 2008 Roster and $cap
...

Total Salary = 2'248'000 M $ with the $cap thought to be 2.3 M $
so we would have 52k left... for raises and the drafties (but if they are Dev players don't count against the cap)

Not sure if I got the numbers of Donovan and Ruiz correctly and if Pete is not re-signed and Kirk doesn't count.

A couple of things:

1. I *think* you have the base salary. But guaranteed bonuses I *think* are used in calculating the cap, which is why Ruiz ($325,000 base/$435K bonuses) and Mathis ($275K base/$410K bonuses) were grandfathered while players like Twellman ($325,008, but $350K or so in bonuses) and Osama De Rosario ($324,999.96 plus some bonus money that I can't recall) are NOT.

2. I *think* that only the first $325K in a player's salary counts towards the cap, which has been the case since the beginning of the league and is how the league has gotten around paying dozens of players more than that.

3. Generation Adidas players do NOT count; so Kirk doesn't count.

4. Development roster players do NOT count. Only senior roster players.

My understanding is that the first DP counts $400K and subsequent DPs 325K. That is the math I've been using. It matches what the article said in the LA times.

1: I did pick only the base salaries and only the ones released in 2007 here: http://www.mlsplayer...alary_info.html

so I should take the "higher" salary for all players then ?

2: no idea there

3: ok so he still is a GenAdidas (till when does that last?) - I've removed his salary from the calculation

4: I can't find the Dev info anymore on the galaxy site, do you know which ones were ? (at least in 2007)

Take away Vagenas and Buddle, and we have room to sign some above average MLS quality players. Please not another "name signing."

Question: How does the allocation money work from year to year? In other words, if you have a player who earns $200k and you put $100k of allocation $$ towards him so that only $100k goes against the cap, does that carry into the next year too, or is that allocation money gone and $200k counts for the same player the following year?

"We've picked up almost $800,000 in allocation money since the end of the season,"

The "picked up" part sounds great to me, because that sounds like we've gained that much on top of what we already had... How much did we get for missing the playoffs?

Ben7's got it right for the Triumvirate (Becks, LD, Ruiz).

One of them counts 400, the other two count 325. So even if Ruiz's base is 325 and bonuses count in salary calculations, his cap hit is still only 325.

More simply put, the cap hit for LD, Becks and Ruiz is 1050 (400+325+325) regardless of how you "stack" them.
