Much bigger news is on the way. Anschutz Entertainment Group apparently is about to unload its stake in WPS, selling its L.A.-based team to a group headed by actor Anthony La Paglia, who is part of the ownership group of Sydney FC in his native Australia.

The group is looking to play at Titan Stadium on the Cal State Fullerton campus, which has staged U.S. national team games, served as a second home for the Galaxy (pre-Home Depot Center) and was the primary stadium used by the L.A. Salsa of the APSL back in the mid-‘90s. The La Paglia group also is looking to bring a United Soccer Leagues First Division club to Fullerton.

AEG, which owns the Galaxy and Houston Dynamo (and once operated six MLS clubs), had planned to put its women's club into HDC's track and field stadium, where the Galaxy often plays U.S. Open Cup games. That it is ready to dump the team is hardly a surprise. From the start AEG has refused to discuss the women's league, even after it was identified as an initial investor.

Mixed feelings if this is true. AEG's deep pockets are great, but their approach to building a competitive team is not: I was expecting them to coax Mia Hamm out of retirement and surround her with young women who didn't make the cut as HDC ushers or nacho-goop pourers. And Titan Stadium is a beautiful place for a soccer game. On the other hand, who knows what the financial commitment of the new ownership would be?

Out of curiosity, what's the source on this?

This is the only WPS thread I could find on here.

Chicago just hired their coach, Emma Hayes of Arsenal. Has anyone heard anything about the LA team? Other than the rumor about AEG selling. Is anyone going to get tickets?

AEG has the season seat deposit link upon their AEG Tickets Site

Hey ese,

Why you be dissin the Riot Squad, holmes? That shit doesn’t fly around here. I’m 100% Latino and I hate those Chivas putos. Plus, there are white mamacitas at Galaxy games that let you fuck their ass and face after the match. Get with the program, pendejo. If you keep writing this crap me and 43 of my cousins are going to get in our one car and stab you.

Maybe. On the one hand, I like soccer, including women's soccer. I also like the idea of supporting a chivas-free league. On the other hand, I'm poor, tired, and cranky. So it partly depends on how much the tickets (not to mention parking) will cost.

I'm leaning toward yes as well, it's only a 20 game season, so that's only 10 home games. Even though I don't trust AEG to build a team as much as I would like to, I'd like them to stay involved, if only to have the team known LA Galaxy Ladies.

I am currently in month two of waiting to hear back on why I should make a season ticket deposit on a vapor team.

If I had to guess, I'd say AEG is not at all certain which of Chivas USA or the Riptide will be around in 2009, and aren't sure yet whether they will need to book filler space in the track stadium (or the main stadium, God help us). The last time I checked the WPS site, AEG was still involved in owners conferences, unless Tonya Antonucci is lying to us.

They've got plenty of time, and plenty of opportunity to scout players, coaches and marketers, since there are half a dozen women's teams in the region now to look at. But they also could go ahead and look at what Peter Wilt's been doing for the Chicago WPS team - oh, PW has something to teach AEG, and AEG is resistant to learn, quelle surprise

Reviving this thread again.

We still have no word from AEG about the LA franchise...but we have our first three players:

It will be an AEG franchise. This week they started getting in touch with people who had inquired. (I totally forgot about this thread.)

I figured AEG would keep the franchise, but they still haven't hired a coach or given the team a name or anything like that.

EDIT: I wouldn't be surprised if AEG just handed one of these to each girl 5 minutes before the opening match.

In all seriousness, the club should be named the LA Galaxy and let's make them part of the bigger club. It makes sense from branding and logistics and besides it will help them sell tickets to all the matches. It's a win win situation.

I posted something along those lines at the WPS website, and had my post deleted...bastards.

I stand corrected... it seems yesterday, without any sort of announcement, LA named Abner Rogers Head Coach.
