some thoughts on Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek the video game

Star Trek Into Darkness

+ characters (I like how all from the main crew got extended screen/story//dialog time and moments)
the new Checkov's overblown accent is still annoying though. Karl Urban just rocks as Bones, Pegg also finally has more screen time. Kirks fall and rise, even if predictable is ok, works especially well with Pike (Greenwood), Bones, Scotty and Uhura/Spock.

 

+ plenty of fun and humor (Trekkies and non Trekkies alike were laughing a couple of times during the movie)

-  story (the story starts of ok but sometime after the popcorn break it all goes downhill fast. Spock Prime's cameo felt unnecessary, the whole Wrath of Kahn death scene/super blood revival felt just cheap and not like a nice nod to long time fans. Don't mind John Harrison (Cumberbatch) being Kahn, would loved to had a bit more back story on him though. Peter Wellers character (and especially his motives) aswell as Carol Marcus were just too shallow for my taste. The Klingon's cameo was lame and feels a bit wasted. Don't love, but don't mind their new ring forehead design, they looked more badass with their helmets on.

-  again too many lens flares (don't let you enough the big budget sets and effects at all)

/ 3D still is not my thing.

Trekkies: If you didn't like the Star Trek (2009) film, don't watch it. If you were ok with it, watch it, but overlook the bad stuff.
for non Trekkies, good popcorn movie
Star Trek just works best as a (mini) Series on TV, a movie just can't do it justice.

+ music/scores (by Michael Giachino)
+ space jumping, fighting, climbing, riddles, mini games, steering a torpedo or ship (briefly) is quite entertaining
/  the story is ok-ish
/ sometimes the graphics/ specially faces were poor and it had a couple of minor glitches but none are game breakers.
- poor controls/steering, it's far from a smooth steering experience unfortunately and can lead to frustrating mission deaths

recommended for fans, not necessarily for the gamers
it has a linear story, it's not an open world/universe ala Mass Effect
takes place after Star Trek (2009) and ends just before Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) starts
remember, there was seldom a good video game from a movie or the other way around

Yep.  I had my concerns when I heard the villain for this pic was Khan that they'd be treading too closely over old ground.  You can probably guess what Spock is hollering here.  I didn't really feel that was necessary. 

 

 

It was okay overall, although I suppose I'm showing my age in saying I found it a bit too darn loud.  I hope next time out they'll show more confidence in their concept than to bring back the Borg or Nazi aliens or other previous Trek bad guys.
