Out of say 20 people, this has been my experiences for why they will not come to games:

14 - MLS? Seriously. MLS sucks... I only watch Champions League quality games and the World Cup.
3 - Harrision? Where's that. Oh? That's far.
2 - You are one of those crazy guys? No thanks, I rather sit and watch the game.
1 - Red Bulls? Who are they? Oh, what used to be the MetroStars. That team is awful. Why would you spend money on that?

About the same for me. Maybe (to be fair), swap the Harrison for the "energy drink team" excuse.

Looking back at the NASL, none of their teams were named after a beverage, or the company that owned them, yet that league went belly up.

That still doesn't explain the 10 years prior to the ownership change. And to say the entire dynamic of soccer in this country changed because of 2 success stories (Portland and Seattle) 3,000 miles away... I don't buy it.

Mine would be:(the people i talk to are all soccer fans from pubs and/or playing)

5 - I've been before, its alright its just not "my" team.
5 - I dont know, not really down with the Red Bull thing.
3 - MLS Sucks (mostly all British ex-pats that support big teams)
3 - New Jersey is too far I live in Brooklyn or Queens
3 - No, but i'd go to a Cosmos game
1 - I fucking hate Henry (always an Irish bartender)

Now that is every 20 people that decline. On the whole most people seem generally apathetic to it, some admit to going some say they'd go or they only go here and there for big games against like LA or something. A decent amount admit to liking the Red Bulls, but not as many as you would like to see.

It isn't fair to compare reactions people had 6 years ago to the Metrostars to reactions today. MLS is a completely different league nowadays. My friends have no problem going to Jersey, especially after I tell them how cheap the beer and good the food is in Newark, one of the big problems is the name. I tell them I'm with the crazy guys and because of that they might get tickets in a different section and we just pregame together. But the name is a huge part of it. If it were the Metrostars today, I think attendance might be a tad bit higher, but not by much. And that's simply because people want to see their team win something. New York only likes winners. So in order of reasons why people don't come to matches:

1. Results
2. Name
3. MLS
4. New Jersey

With 'the name' gone there is a far greater opportunity to build a connection

Now it's the RedBulls fans. they may be even louder than the DC guys who, for reasons beyond imagining, had 50 seats saved for them up front.

Philadelphia: I love you guys, really, but you're getting schooled.

The noise in here is deafening.

Not sure a symbol would work in this case ... didn't Prince (or the media ) go with an acronym after that ...... TAFKAP

That might work here ... TFMEFKARBNY .... it certainly rolls off the tongue a lot easier than Red Bull New York

with the silent "B" before the ny, I'm pronouncing it "Karny", definitely a local tie to the community!

Yep... that's the crux of it.

It's the same exact problem Toronto is facing. Watch their games... remember when they were the darlings of MLS? The novelty has ended and their team is dead last... empty seats everywhere and apathy.

They need to change their name.
