Tape delay on big events is dumb.

The NBC assholes fucked it up again. I was just fucking around in the Internet and just saw the swimming results. Bullshit.

I downloaded the live extra app just now to watch the big live events. Hope it's a good app with no issues.

You cannot fake the 400 IM, or any event over 200 meters.

I know that the announcers are saying that it's a grueling event. Please know that it fucking is.

When you train for the 100 (any stroke), you train for the spring distance and the stroke. When you train for the 200, it's tough b/c it's an extended sprint, so you're training for sprints and middle distance, in a way.

When you train for ANYTHING above 200, not only are you training for sprints (it's still a fucking sprint, unfortunately), you're now officially in middle distance territory, so you have to train for distance.

THEN you have to perfect each stroke. But there's a caveat. You have to perfect the stroke at a middle distance pace, kinda like you're training for a 400 butterfly, a 400 backstroke, a 400 breaststroke, and a 400 freestyle, and the first 3 don't exist!!!

Then you have to train for the transition btw strokes. And I'm not talking about the turns. I'm talking about the difficulty your body faces when it's going one stroke and getting a groove on, and all of a sudden it has to switch to another stroke that uses different muscles.

I can't stress how fucking hard it is to train for the last 2 components of the 400 IM. B/c no matter how much you train, how good a shape you're in, when you hit the pool and do the race, it's crushing to your spirit when you switch strokes, b/c you've never, ever competed in a 400 fly or a 400 back or a 400 breast, and just as you're getting into a groove, you switch strokes.

It's like you're fighting your body, mind and spirit. There's no other event like that.

Plus, no matter how good you are, everybody has a specialty that they rely on. When you get to the elite level, you cannot over-rely on your specialty. But your body and mind desperately want to rely on that specialty.

All this to say.... You cannot fake the 400 IM.

Tonight we saw somebody who tried to fake it. And he failed.

My college coach was desperate to get me to do the 400IM. It turns out that it's my most competitive event. But I just couldn't devote my entire being like I would have needed to do.

Training for the 400IM brings grown men to tears. (So does the 50 free, btw.)

Abby Wambach is a man. I mean that in the most respectful and complimentary way.

Think Rapinoe has matured. Her skillful play is in the context of team play so far, and she is making defending a part of her game. Good.

Carly Lloyd still annoys me. Shannon Boxx is way past her expiration date, but she is more reliable on defense. Lloyd tends to chase and get caught out of position, but she and Cheney are doing pretty well moving the ball through the midfield.

O'reilly and Tobin are the same. Lots of hustle, lacking in technique.

I am bothered by how so many of the girls were flummoxed by Colombia's on-ball skills. Lots of chasing and diving in. Don't think they will be able to get away with that against Brazil. They do show lots of balls when things don't go well.

Heather Mitts looked pretty good. AND, she played all right too.

Bummed that I can't watch the next set of games. Will be in San Diego for an AP conference. Surprising result from France--not for the win, but the margin. DPRK may be ready for another shellacking, but you have to think that Pia will not want to risk injury to her big guns.

When your relay is the underdog, one strategy is to start off w/ the 2 fastest swimmers. The hope is that it's more likely to put pressure on the opponent's weakest swimmer and gamble that they will cave, while hoping at the same time that your weakest swimmer(s) will rise to the occasion.

Ppl bitching about the US losing the 4x100 free are basically diminishing a fucking amazing swim by Agnel. This dude is legit.

Which thread should I be in?

Alex to Abby... Goal!

EDIT: Koreans getting desperate and dirty.

Great Leader is now a deity in North Korea.

The world did get to hear from another North Korean weightlifter, Om Yun Chol, after he won gold on Sunday, but all he wanted to talk about was the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.
"How can any man possibly lift 168kg?" Om was quoted as saying by the Olympic News Service. "I believe the great Kim Jong Il looked over me. ... I am very happy and give thanks to our Great Leader for giving me the strength to lift this weight. I believe Kim Jong Il gave me the record and all my achievements. It is all because of him."

This may be the best video you watch all year.

Not Olympics but who cares...

At first I thought, Okay, they're just keeping loose before the race.

Then it kind of kept going and I was starting to wonder if it was some kind of put-on, or more likely cheesy soft-core porn for Aussie dudes (or lesbians) who dig cheerfully athletic women.

Then the race finally starts and she fricking wins. It didn't look that close.

So, um, she has to be in the Olympics, too, yes?

C'mon, Gs, make Omar your third DP already!
