QUOTE(Giase)
Among the invitees are former Seton Hall player Ted Niziolek; Ricky Schramm, who played with the Red Bulls reserves last year; and Tighe Dombrowski (San Jose) and Marshall Leonard (New England), who have MLS experience.

Leonard was a damn good player before his injury.

Dombrowski is a solid player. Leonard could provide some depth pending how fit he is.

Does the Crew still own Ted Niziolek's rights?

Metrofanatic - are you going to GS for media day today?

It's not media day, it's just an open to media session. But after that nitpicking... no. The real job gets in the way. I might try to go tomorrow, but it's unlikely. Hoping for the week in February between LA in Austria.

Academy player Matt Kassel has stood out, along with supplemental pick Michael Palacio and Tighe Dombrowski.
The Metrologist
Next thing you know, he'll have Osorio driving him to the airport.
Belshina
blue team: Gabriel Ortega
local kid from Queens, NY used to play for Brooklyn Italians youth teams.

11:34am- We finally had a goal, scored by Gabriel Ortega. There was no roar from the crowd. Hopefully more goals are coming.

Here's an article about Matt Kassel, on whether he'll turn pro or go to Maryland.

He's ours, he trained with us today. Wasn't there some crazy rule that New England was invoking that if a player trains with you he is your property for the next 20 years?

Because his father worked for the MetroStars, we also automatically have the rights to his children.
onionsack
By the sound of it he wants to play here and sign, so it appears to be up to Agoos and Osorio.

I can't image any reason why they would not want to sign him to a dev contract. He seems to have great talent for his age, he wants to play here, and signing him would send a strong message to the academy players that it is possible to verticaly intergrate from academy to first team. That would serve as strong motivation i would think.

Metrosct
If he is going to give up his college eligibility and commit to RBNY, it's going to take more $ and commitment (years) to get it done. Granted the Red Bulls may be the be place for his professional development, I just don't think he'll take $16k to put his future in their hands.

Promising stuff I hear maybe we'll get something good out of this camp!

Some players that impressed Ives on Tuesday

QUOTE
Michael Palacio- Was very active all over the field and showed a good nose for the attack. Scored a nice goal and combined well with his teammates. Good size and good motor, may still be a bit raw to be a first-team contributor but a roster spot looks good.

Matt Kassel- The kid is good. He has good vision, good ideas, a good motor and showed better quickness than I expected. He delivers good long passes and has a bright future. I would be shocked if the Red Bulls don't sign him before April.

Tighe Dombrowski- He's small (5-8) but Dombrowski looked pretty good as a central defender. He's tenacious and passes well.

Marshall Leonard- Still fast and still strong, Leonard is a great option for the Red Bulls given the things Juan Carlos Osorio wants to do with his formations. Leonard can play fullback or wing in a 3-5-2 and left back in a 4-4-2. He will be battling with Chris Leitch and Kevin Goldthwaite for a roster spot and I think he's a good bet to make the team.

Scott Palguta- Big defender with good size, Palguta impressed as a left back/center back combo. Osorio mentioned him as a player he liked on Tuesday. Can he compete with Eric Brunner? We'll find out later in the week.

Christian Camacho- Skillful and tough defensive midfielder may dribble a bit too much for Osorio's liking but he showed well on Tuesday.

Good point. I wonder if that's going to be the stalling block.

If he's good enough for the 18 man, I'd be shocked. If he is good enough, he should be on the US U-20 team as well.

Thomas (W)rongen... Paging Thomas Rongen.

Rongen, Kassel said, "has been asking about me and wants to see me play. Hopefully, he will bring me into camp soon."'

if his parents have $$$ they may be willing to back him up so he can take the risk
MiLo4891
I hope he gets signed, if the kid is as talented as people say he is then why not. Yeah there's a big gap MLS and even NCAA but have Kassel play a lot of minutes with the resevres and get him ready for next year or 09.
MiLo4891
sorry for the double post but I noticed this on the team site

article about the camp

QUOTE
"midfielder Matt Kassel from Bridgewater, NJ, can only be identified by his number 7 on his yellow vest and his more-or-less resemblance to a younger Frank Lampard. "

really? Franky Lamps? Thats a mighty big comparision!

I hope they sign the kid he looks like he has a big enough frame to play in the physical MLS, is he good at holding of defenders(shielding the ball) imo thats a tell tale sign for the level of a mid, that and if they can go send a thru ball off of his first touch?

JCO play em in the reserve and bring him in during garbage time when Metro are up a couple goals!
lakaix15
i guess we have our starting attaching midfielder....
JayDelight729
I think they say he physically looks like Frank Lampard, not that his game resembles Lampard.

Good Q and A though.

He seems like an intelligent player who has a good soccer IQ. Never a bad thing in a player.

Those of you wondering about Matt "Boy Wonder" Kassel, the Red Bulls are still looking into whether he can go to training camp without risking the loss of his college eligibility. He is set to play for the University of Maryland if he does not wind up on the Red Bulls.

gas huffer
No Palacio.

Sounded like he was doing well from Ives' reports.
metroveli96
i honestly think we should sign kassel, i have a question though, if kassel goes to college, then he would go to the draft afterwards or do we have some sort of right on him so we could sign him then

btw gas huffer where is that weird picture on your sig from
JayDelight729
Palacio is a draft pick, so he wouldn't need to receive an invite. We already hold his rights.

I'd expect him to be in California.

I think I read someone post that in Europe he played left fullback

I'm surprised Chris Megaloudis survived. I always thought he was a bit overrated playing for Stony Brook. He was a streaky player. I ran into him in Bayside, Queens a month ago and he said he had a tryout for a Greek 2nd division team.
Olesh
Any word on Metro's training schedule in LA? I assume they'll be at the HDC. I might be able to check out at least some of practice later this week...

so is kassel going????
